Brussels Pee Wees eliminate Blyth in group final BY RUSTY BLADES The Blyth Pee Wees concluded their season last week as they lost two games and were swept in three straight by Brussels in their Group Championship series. Belgrave Atoms win tournament crown The Belgrave Atoms have had a good season. They have played 35 games. They won 25 - lost 6 - tied 4. The year-end tournament was held at Hensall. The boys played three games and won them all. This made them champs on the “A” side placing them first out of eight teams. The following players deserve congratulations: Brent Robinson, Corey Moran, Eugene Fenton, Wayne Fenton, Brian Marks, Dan Gusso, Kirk Krieger, Ryan Cook, Ryan Moffatt, Tom Pfeiffer, Vaughn Vincent, Chris Piluke, Jeremy Campbell, Dave Piluke. The game end­ ed with Brussels recording a 5-4 victory to take a 1-0 lead in the series which is the best three out of five. Game two in the series was played Saturday, March 24 in Kincardine. The Crusaders once again open­ ed the scoring three minutes into the game when Tim Fritz won a face-off back to Brian Campbell whose shot beat the Kings’ goalie cleanly. Brussels then increased their lead to two when Dave Harding and Dave Stephenson combined to set up Ken Cousins for the goal. Campbell scored his second of the period unassisted with only 54 seconds left in the period. The Kings cut the lead by one as they scored a power-play goal with only 23 seconds left in the period. The Crusaders lead 3-1 after one period of play. ^There were three goals scored in u.e second period all of them by Kincardine which gave them a 4-3 lead after two periods of play. The Crusaders tied it up four minutes into the third when David Montgomery scored a power-play goal with Troy Pocaluyko and Jeff Espensen drawing the assists on the goal. Brussels took the lead again with another power-play goal this time Campbell and Fritz combined to set up Kevin McArter for the goal. The Kings however came back and tied the game 50 seconds later. The game winner came with just under seven min­ utes to play in the game when Fritz and Paul Robinson combined to set up McArter for his second of the game. Brian Ten Pas added an empty net goal with 25 seconds left in the game to give the Crusaders a 7-5 victory and 2-0 lead in the series. Game 3 in the series is Friday, March 30 at 8:30 p.m. in Brussels while game 4, if necessary, is set for next Wednesday in Kincardine at 8:30 p.m. Game 5, if necessary, has not been set yet. In game two in Blyth on Monday, March 19 Brussels scored the final five goals in a 6-2 win. After Brussels opened the scoring in the first period Blyth scored two quick goals early in the second. Mike Johnston tied the game 1-1 after a ament in Listowel. In their first game Saturday at the Hensall tournament Belgrave trounced the Goderich team nine to one. Brent Robinson opened the scor­ ing during the first period but Goderich came back shortly after to tie it up. Then in the second period Continued on page 24 NAME...... Blyth gained the lead on a power play as Wilfred Datema’s point shot was deflected by Benjie Hakkers to Brian Mc- Nichol in the slot. Brian quickly put a shot upstairs over the goaltender. Brussels rebounded for a 4-2 lead after two periods and scored the only two goals of the third as they made it look easy in this 6-2 win. The series ended in Brussels on Friday, March 23 as Brussels claimed the championship trophy with a 5-2 win. Jerrod Button opened the scor­ ing with a power play goal one and a half minutes into the game with linemates Mike Bromley and Ben­ jie Hakers credited with assists. Brussels then went to work with five straight goals for a 5-1 early third-period lead. Blyth’s last hope was provided by Jerrod Button as he scored his second goal of the game to cut the lead to 5-2. Once again linemates Mike Brom­ ley and Benjie Hakkers had the assists on the goal. That was as close as the game would get and full credit goes to Brussels as their hustle and desire carried them to a sweep of the final series with this 5-2 win. The only unfinish­ ed business that is left is some final elbow sharpening before the Pee Wees play their coaches and fathers.
