Exeter to appeal ruling from Ontario Supreme Court The Town of Exeter announced last week it will appeal an Ontario Supreme Court decision that said it must pay for planning services from the County of Huron. The town had launched the court case claiming it shouldn’t have to pay for planning costs since it had hired its own planning specialist. That split had grown out of a dispute between Exeter and a neighbouring township in which the county planning department had acted on behalf of both sides and the town was not happy with the results. Exeter sought to with hold $19,000 from its $378,534 levy to the county. At one point in that long dispute Exeter Mayor Bruce Shaw had threatened to have his town secede from the county. In recent years relations have smoothed and Mayor Shaw said last week he hoped the appeal wouldn’t set back the improving relationship. The principle of the issue was too important not to be challenged, he said. When the Supreme Court ruled Exeter must pay for planning from the county even if it didn’t use it, it was setting up the county as a senior level of government, not as a partner. It would in effect set up county government as a form of regional government, he said. “We think all municipalities have some thing at stake here,” he said. Representing the town in its appeal is lawyer Michael Mitchell (the same lawyer used by the village of Blyth recently) who said the appeal will be filed with the Ontario court of appeal. He said there were a number of grounds of appeal of the decision by Mr. Justice Nicholson McRae. “Our concern is if this is not clarified it will mean that from a practical standpoint regional government is here without any legislation,” he said. Fire destroys car owned by Brussels man Garry Morrison of RR 3, Brussels was travelling east on County Road 16 in Grey Township at 5:40 a.m. on Thursday when he noticed smoke coming from the dashboard of his 1988 Plymouth, a spokesper son from the Wingham OPP said. Mr. Morrison immediately pull ed to the shoulder and stopped and the vehicle burst into flames. Cause of the fire according to the spokesperson has been listed as electrical defect. The car was demolished.
