Many attend Friendship Gub meeting With the advent of spring, accompanied by nice sunny weath­ er that inspired a goodly number to attend the Brussels Friendship Club meeting held on Wednesday, March 21 at the Legion Hall. As March is always associated with St. Patrick, the members participated in displaying their Irish heritage by wearing some­ thing green. Gerald Exel opened the meeting with the singing of “O Canada” followed by prayer. The customary secretary and treasurer’s reports followed. The Friendship Club is invited for their annual visit to Huronview Faron directs ‘Guys & Dolls’ Students of Mitchell District High School will be presenting the popular Broadway musical ‘‘Guys and Dolls” on April 5, 6, and 7 under the direction of Brussels­ based actress Donna Faron. Ms. Faron is an accomplished actress having worked in theatres across Canada including, Blyth, Stratford, and Vancouver Play­ house. She has done several com­ mercials and has performed in both the television and film media. She has had some directing experience in the past, though this is the first time tor Mitchell students. ‘‘Guys and Dolls” was produced on Broadway during the 1950’s originally starring Marlon Brando, Frank Sinatra and Jean Simmons and Ms. Faron describes it as a double love story with one unfold­ ing between a gambler and an innocent young girl in the Salvation Army band and another between a crap shooter and his chorus girl girlfriend. ‘‘We are keeping the play set in the ‘50’s and the kids are really enthusiastic,’’ she says. “There is a cast of about 30 and they ajp involved in every aspect of the production, from lighting and sound, to props and costumes, in addition to performing. They are doing a great job.” Admission to “Guys and Dolls” is $6 for adults and $5 for students. Euchre winners The Oddfellow and Rebekah regular euchre party was held in the Lodge Hall, March 19 with a good attendance. Prizewinners were: high, Phyllis Mitchell, Albert Quipp; low, Elunid McNair, Calvin James; lucky table, Sarah Stephenson, Vera Scouler, Garner Nicholson, Calvin James; lucky serviette, Ross Cunningham; lucky cup, Calvin James. The next euchre party will be held in the Lodge Hall, April 16 at 8 p.m. on April 18. A committee of Mary Lowe and Sarah Stephenson was appointed to obtain the necessary entertainment while several mem­ bers volunteered to provide squares and cookies. The Canadian Legion has very graciously provided the auditorium to the Friendship Club for their monthly meetings. With such a pleasant environment plus the kitchen facilities the club is greatly indebted to the Legion. It was unanimously voted on a motion by Mary Lowe seconded by Verna Tunney to donate $100 to the Legion to indicate appreciation and gratitude. The election of officers followed for the ensuing year with the results as follows: President, Ger­ ald Exel; Vice President, Sarah Stephenson; Secretary, Doris Hooper; Treasurer, Vera Hastings. Euchre and Uno were played. Winners were: high lady (euchre), Mary Clark; low lady, Sarah Step- enson; high man, Mildred Perrie; low man, Effie Hendricks; High Uno, Roberta Simpson; low Uno, Doris Hooper; lucky table, Isobel Alcock, Martha Logan, Ruby Steiss and Mary Lowe; birthday in April, Ethel Brewer; lucky cup, Annie Engel. The next regular meeting will be held on Wednesday, May 16. Brussels People capture the “A” trophy. Representing the Wingham Lions Club Brussels girl, Margaret Jarvis, is again doing remarkably in public speaking competitions in the area. On March 19 she spoke on the “Environment” at the Lions Club Regional Effective Speaking contest in Wingham where she took first place. She advanced to the contest held in Blyth on March 13, which she also won and will be competing in Grand Valley on April 5. By Bonnie Gropp Phone 887-9114 or 523-4792 The Brussels Figure Skating Club held its last meeting on March 14, and there are several items already planned for next year that you may want to mark on your calendar. On November 3, 1990 the club is again sponsoring a Skate-a-thon and anyone interested in taking part can contact any member when the season begins in October. There will also be an Interclub competition hosted by Brussels on February 17 next year. Twelve other clubs will be participating. A tenative date was set for next year’s carnival - March 2. This will depend on the availability of guest skaters. Members, don’t forget the family pot luck dinner to be held at the community centre on Thursday night at 6 p.m. Bring your skates! Several members of the Brussels-Walton Trailblazers at­ tended the Bruce Regional Snow­ mobile Association’s (BRSA) mini­ convention in Belmore. Club mem­ ber Mark Gropp, was elected as President of BRSA for the upcom­ ing season. Brussels Minor Sports held its year-end banquet at the Brussels, Morris and Grey Community Cen­ tre on Sunday evening. The new executive was selected for the upcoming year. President Chris Lee is replacing Bob Thomas who has stepped down. Rhonda Fischer is taking over the duties of Trea­ surer from Trish Clarkson; Bev Stephenson is remaining as Secre­ tary, as is Keith Mulvey as Town Contact. Returning directors are Gary Dauphin, Laurie Campbell, Chris Cooper, Dave Williams and Diane McCallum. New directors are: Neil Hemingway, Jim Oldfield and Neil Thompson. Eleanor Hemingway spent a week in Aylmer visiting her daugh­ ter Karen Phillips and family. Brussels firemen Murray McAr- ter, Don Crawford, Ross Somers and Doug Sholdice, made up the team that participated in the Ann­ ual Wingham Firefighter Dart Tournament on Saturday.
