Against Hensall Jerrod Button assisted on Mike Bromley’s first period goal and Mike Bromley increased the lead to 2-0 early in the second period with an unassist ed short-handed tally. Hensall cut the lead in half with five minutes left in the period. Brian McNichol added an insur ance goal as time expired as his shot directly from a face-off slipped between the goalies’ legs. This 3-1 win sent Blyth into the championship round where they faced-off against some old foes from Brussels. Brussels scored a goal in both the first and third periods while Mike Bromley sand wiched two goals for Blyth in the second frame. Jerrod Button and Benjie Hakkers assisted on his first while Ryan Chamney assisted on his second, which was a short- handed effort. The game went into overtime and Mike Bromley notch ed the hat-trick 28 seconds into the extra session as his shot from centre ice fooled the Brussels puck stopper for a 3-2 Blyth win. Next up was Clifford and it was another battle to the wire before Blyth came up short. Mike Bromley continued his offensive efforts for Blyth, in the first period as he backhanded in a rebound of Henry Bos’s shot for a 1-0 Blyth lead. Clifford took a 2-1 lead in the second period before Mike Bromley tied the game with Blyth Novices lose to Clinton Blyth Novices travelled to Clin ton on Thursday, March 15 for an exhibition game. Blyth displayed little effort in this game and got out-skated 6-1. Michael Haggitt was Blyth’s bright point in this game, and scored Blyth’s only goal, assisted by Jeff Johnston and Michael Courtney. Blyth travelled to Teeswater on Saturday, March 17 and split in tournament action. Blyth out-scor ed Brussels 10-0 in their first game. Michael Haggitt led the scoring parade with a hat-trick and two assists. Darryl Bromley picked up two goals and two assists and Jeff Cowan added two goals and one assist. Michael Courtney scored one and assisted on two, with an unassisted powerplay tally mid way through the period. Blyth recorded their last lead of the game five minutes into the third period as Jerrod Button passed to Mike Bromley whose shot from close range was deflected by Benjie Hakkers. Twenty seconds later Clifford had a 4-3 lead as they regrouped with two goals from the ensuing face-offs from centre ice. Blyth put up a fight to the end but couldn’t count the equalizer as time expired. Nevertheless this was a solid team effort and the boys put up a good show in the 41st Goderich Lions Young Canada Week hockey tournament. Blyth and Brussels opened their Group Championship series in Brussels’ last Friday, March 16. Blyth built a 2-0 second period lead before Brussels stormed back in the third frame with three unan swered goals to snatch a 3-2 opening game win. Jerrod Button set up Blyth’s opening goal as Mike Bromley split the defence at the Brussels blueline and scored on a shot to the short side. A short-handed goal in the second period staked Blyth to a 2-0 lead. Tim Lyons won the face off to Jonathan Collins whose shot bounced off the post to Christopher Howson. Christopher waited until the goalie went down and slipped a backhand shot over the goalie’s outstretched glove. It was all Brussels in the third as they scored three goals, including the shorthanded winner with less than two minutes left in the game. The action should stay heated up as the series continues this week. QUOTE OF THE WEEK: Former Oshawa Generals general manager Amanda Anderson and Michael Ansley picking up a goal apiece. Blyth’s second game was a real battle, with Clifford defeating Blyth 3-1. In Canada, we call them sports reporters.’’ The Belgrave Atoms have been scoring goals like crazy in their last two games against Bayfield on March 10 and Belmore on March 7 to trounce both teams. •„ In their game against Belmore, Belgrave goalie Chris Piluke kept Belmore’s goals down to one while his forwards shot six goals into the opposition’s net. Belgrave was off to a slow start in the first period with only one goal by Eugene Fenton but they were hot in the second and third periods as Brent Robinson scored three goals while teammates Wayne Fenton and Brian Marks each scored one. The team didn’t slow down in their next game against Bayfield when they scored five goals to Bayfield’s one. Chris Piluke cover ed the net again for the Belgrave Atoms while the rest of the team showed their best in the second period where they scored all five goals. Racking up the points were Wayne Fenton, Corey Moran, Ryan Cook, Kurk Kreiger and Brian Marks. Clip & bAai' P.O.
