Livestock gets itswesterncattle

cost too much. There is a
stocker sale at Brussels Live
stock every two weeks though
the western cattle are available
for sale privately throughout
the week. Mr. Brindley said
there is never a consistent
number of stocker cattle avail-
ableand the numbers in the
barn depend on the demand for
western cattle.

Fast talker
Speakingalmostfasterthan the
ear can hear is Brian Rintoul,
the main auctioneer in the
cattle ring. He spends about six
hours a day on Fridays selling
fats (full-grown fat cattle) and
cows. He’s been employed by
Gordon Brindley, president of
Brussels Livestock and owner
of thestockyards in Lucknow
for about six years.
Unloading
Thereare three different sizes of shutes for cattlemen to unload their cargoat. Most of the cattle that
are unloaded at this barn are dead within two days since they are basically sold as slaughter cattle.
Occasionally, a bidder will buy a milkcow and gamble on her but al I the fat cattle are so Id for
slaughter.

One lone dairy cow has been unloaded by this farmer with his
children whilean employee of the Brussels Livestock books the
cow in and identifiestheanimal with a sticker number. After the
animal is booked in, it is herded to the many pens inside the
cattle barn. The barn can hold about 2,000 head of cattle but
thereare usually only 500 to600cattle housed in the barn for the
Friday sale. The number of dairy cattle versus beef cattle varies
during the year though there are usually fewer dairy cattle on a
regular basis. I n the fall, a lot of beef cattle are available for sale
said Mr. Brindley since this is the time when farmers are
checking their herds and shipping out the poorer cattle so they
don’t have to be fed during the winter.
