'Egg-sact' records
After each gathering, the eggs are counted and the total written
on a form that hangs on the wall behind each row. This lets the
farmer keep track of the production levels of his chickens and
how many eggs he is shipping. Records are also kept on feed
and water consumption.
'Egg-spert'
Twice a week, early in the morning, Mervyn Schneider arrives
at Johnston’s farm tocollect the eggs. There are usually about
five of these carts ready for Mervyn who hooks on to them and
lifts them into the truck with acargo master. The450dozen eggs
on each cart are held in place in the truck with steel braces and
the lips on the shelves of the cart prevent the eggs from sliding
off thecart. Oncesafelyaboard thetruck, theeggsaredelivered
to L. H. Gray and Son in Moorefield where they are washed,
graded, packaged and delivered to the store shelf.
Egg collector
The egg gathering station is largely operated by belts. The eggs
roll from the chicken cages onto stationary belts. Then, the
beltscan beturnedon tocarry the eggs forward until they arrive
at this revolving egg collector which carries the eggs from the
conveyor belts in a circular motion to the table where the
gatherer picks them. Three conveyor belts from the three piled
rows of cages lead to this revolving rack which is segregated
into three sections for the three rows. The equipment is made
out of plastic and runs fairly slow.
Larry arrives at the barn in the
morning and sweeps the barn
floor right away. He makes
another round of the barn
checking the cages, the chick
ens and the mechanized equip
ment. Later in the day, Larry
checks the rows again and pays
special attention to feed and'
water levels. If the levels are
abnormally low then Larry
knows to inspect the automated
feeding equipment which de
posits feed into the troughs six
times a day and the water
nipples (a pipeline distributing
water to every cage where
chickens can peck at a nipple to
receive water) for they will
likely be broken.
