Clinton Hospital awarded for superior performance Clinton Public Hospital was one of only 32 employers across Canada to receive an award for excellence in occupational health and safety practices. The Workwell award, from the Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB), also included a rebate of $4,924 to the hospital. The Workwell program, which got its start in January of 1989, was set up to allow employers in Ontario with superior health and workplace performance an oppor tunity to be awarded. Those who meet Workwell’s criteria qualify for a rebate between 10 per cent and 75 per cent of their WCB assess ment. CPH received the 10 per cent rebate. However, those who don’t meet the criteria may be subject to surcharges on their base assess ment for poor performance records or for inferior occupational health and safety programs. Therefore, explained Kevin Webb, the co- chairman of the CPH Health and Safety Committee, it would proba bly be best for those companies with poor records not to apply for the program. He explained the reason that the hospital did decide to sign up is because CPH has been honored three times in recent years for their safety record. In 1985, 1987 and 1988 they were awarded the Acci dent Prevention Achievement Award from the Health Care Occu pational and Safety Association. The WCB had kind words for the 32 firms chosen out of 279 entries for the awards. In a press release, WCB Chairman Dr. Robert Elgie stated, “The employers and staff of these 32 companies being recog nized by Workwell should be commended for their excellent performances. These firms range in size from small businesses to large corporations, and they are located in both large urban centres and small rural towns, demonstrat ing that excellence in occupational health and safety is a reachable goal for all organizations.” CPH proved themselves deserv ing of the award by receiving 1,155 points out of a possible 1,285 points under the program. This gave the hospital a score of 89.9 per cent; a psssing score is 51 per cent. In a letter to Lorie Segeren, the secretary of the CPH Health and Safety Committee, Workwell Man ager Stephanie Hennessy further praised the hospital for their ef forts. “You and the staff of Clinton Public Hospital are applauded for the exemplary status of your firm’s historical accident and illness per formance and its current occupa tional health and safety program,” she wrote.
