Blyth Atoms split pair of games with Flesherton
The Blyth Atom team continued
on their way to an All Ontario Final
series by splitting a pair of games
with Flesherton.
Both teams played good hosts
and lost their home games.
In game one Blyth tallied first on
a fine passing play. Greg Toll and
Jason Rutledge drew assists on
Jason McDougall’s goal. Flesher
ton then scored two quick goals to
gain the lead. Blyth came back to
tie the game before the end of the
period as Jason Rutledge stuffed a
loose puck past the Flesherton
goalie. Greg Toll drew an assist on
this goal.
The Blyth boys continued to try
to gain the lead but in the second
period Flesherton pressed hard to
gain the lead. Mike Salverda tied
the score on a fine solo effort but
Flesherton pulled ahead seconds
later. In the third period Blyth tied
the score early as Chad Haggitt put
the loose puck behind the Flesher
ton goalie. Jason McDougall re
ceived an assist on this goal. This
left the game tied after three
periods of play.
In the overtime Flesherton again
scored to pull ahead. Blyth tried
hard but couldn’t score on a fine
Flesherton goalie. With 13 seconds
left Flesherton scored in the empty
net to end the game with a 6-4
score.
The first half of game two was
more of the same thing. Blyth
couldn’t get on track to pull in the
lead. Flesherton scored twice mid
way through the first period. Jason
McDougall scored twice late in the
first period to tie the score. His first
goal was on the power play with
assists going to Darryl Shannon
and Chad Haggitt. Jason’s second
goal was on a fine passing play
from Jason Rutledge and Mike
Salverda.
Early in the second period Flesh
erton scored to gain the lead once
more. Midway through the second
period Blyth got on track and
finally showed some fine passing
plays and aggressive forechecking.
This fine play resulted in three
unanswered goals in the last half of
the second period and one early in
the third period to give the Blyth
boys a commanding 6-3 lead.
Jason Rutledge scored twice with
assists going to Jason McDougall
and Mike Salverda. On his second
goal Frederick Datema received an
assist. Brad Anderson scored with
assists going to Mike Salverda and
Chris Stewart. In the third period
Jason Rutledge closed the scoring
with assists going to defenceman
Rob Johnston and Wes Wilson.
With a three-goal lead late in the
third period the Blyth boys were
thinking of the ride home and not
the hockey game. Sloppy plays by
the whole team resulted in two
goals by Flesherton. With time
running out Blyth was able to hold
back the final Flesherton attempt
and go home with a 6-5 victory. The
Flesherton team showed true char

The Blyth Pee Wees continued
their group playoff last week with
three games against Seaforth II.
Blyth tied the series on Monday,
March 5 in Blyth with a 4-3
overtime win.
Ryan Chamney opened the scor
ing after a scramble in front of the
Seaforth net assisted by Brian
McNichol and Christopher How-
son. Seaforth rebounded to take a
2-1 first period lead and the score
remained that way into the third
period before Blyth scored two
goals for a 3-2 lead. Blyth tied the
game as Mike Bromley carried the
puck the length of the ice and
passed in the shot to Jerrod Button
who counted the equalizer. Jerrod
Button and Benjie Hakkers assisted
on the go-ahead goal as Mike
Bromley skated in alone from the
blueline and scored on a nice deke.
Seaforth regrouped as they pull
ed their goalie and tied the game in
the final minute. This set the stage
for the second overtime game in a
row only this time one goal was all
that was scored. Brian McNichol
had the honour as he spun around
near the blueline and slapped a
quick shot toward the goal that
eluded the screened goaltender.
The fourth game of the series
was played in Seaforth on Satur
day, March 10 and Blyth responded
with a 5-4 squeaker to take a 5-3
lead in points.
Wilfred Datema and Mike Brom
ley set up Jerrod Button in the slot
for the game opening goal but
Seaforth scored three straight goals
for a commanding 3-1 lead. Mike
Bromley then recorded the natural
hat-trick as he scored one goal in
the final minute of the first period
and gave Blyth a 4-3 lead with two
goals in the final two minutes of the
second period. Benjie Hakkers and
Wilfred Datema assisted on Mike’s
first period marker while Tim
Lyons set up Mike’s go-ahead goal
late in period two.
Seaforth tied the game early in
the third but Brian McNichol
scored his second game winning
goal in a row midway through the
final frame. Tim Cowan and Ryan
Chamney recorded the assists as
Brian’s shot changed direction
after hitting a Seaforth defender.
This 5-4 win enabled Blyth to win
the series in Blyth on Sunday,
March 11 with either a win or a tie.
It was another tight checking
game highlighted by strong defen
sive play as Blyth scored a late
short-handed goal to take the game
and the series with a 3-2 win.
Seaforth opened the scoring with
the only goal of period one and
increased it to 2-0 early in the
second frame. Blyth finally lit the
red light up with five minutes left
in the second period on a wild
