Blyth Atoms split pair of games with Flesherton The Blyth Atom team continued on their way to an All Ontario Final series by splitting a pair of games with Flesherton. Both teams played good hosts and lost their home games. In game one Blyth tallied first on a fine passing play. Greg Toll and Jason Rutledge drew assists on Jason McDougall’s goal. Flesher­ ton then scored two quick goals to gain the lead. Blyth came back to tie the game before the end of the period as Jason Rutledge stuffed a loose puck past the Flesherton goalie. Greg Toll drew an assist on this goal. The Blyth boys continued to try to gain the lead but in the second period Flesherton pressed hard to gain the lead. Mike Salverda tied the score on a fine solo effort but Flesherton pulled ahead seconds later. In the third period Blyth tied the score early as Chad Haggitt put the loose puck behind the Flesher­ ton goalie. Jason McDougall re­ ceived an assist on this goal. This left the game tied after three periods of play. In the overtime Flesherton again scored to pull ahead. Blyth tried hard but couldn’t score on a fine Flesherton goalie. With 13 seconds left Flesherton scored in the empty net to end the game with a 6-4 score. The first half of game two was more of the same thing. Blyth couldn’t get on track to pull in the lead. Flesherton scored twice mid­ way through the first period. Jason McDougall scored twice late in the first period to tie the score. His first goal was on the power play with assists going to Darryl Shannon and Chad Haggitt. Jason’s second goal was on a fine passing play from Jason Rutledge and Mike Salverda. Early in the second period Flesh­ erton scored to gain the lead once more. Midway through the second period Blyth got on track and finally showed some fine passing plays and aggressive forechecking. This fine play resulted in three unanswered goals in the last half of the second period and one early in the third period to give the Blyth boys a commanding 6-3 lead. Jason Rutledge scored twice with assists going to Jason McDougall and Mike Salverda. On his second goal Frederick Datema received an assist. Brad Anderson scored with assists going to Mike Salverda and Chris Stewart. In the third period Jason Rutledge closed the scoring with assists going to defenceman Rob Johnston and Wes Wilson. With a three-goal lead late in the third period the Blyth boys were thinking of the ride home and not the hockey game. Sloppy plays by the whole team resulted in two goals by Flesherton. With time running out Blyth was able to hold back the final Flesherton attempt and go home with a 6-5 victory. The Flesherton team showed true char­ acter by not letting up and skating We scored! Game 3 was to be played in Flesherton Tuesday, March 13 at 7 p.m. Game 4 will be played in Blyth Wednesday, March 14, at 7 p.m. The fifth game will be played on Saturday, March 17 in Flesherton if necessary. i BLYTH INDUSTRIAL HOCKEY LEAGUE TOURNAMENT AT BLYTH & DISTRICT COMMUNITY CENTRE Blyth Pee Wees advance to championships MARCH 15,16,17 &18 BY RUSTY BLADES The Blyth Pee Wees continued their group playoff last week with three games against Seaforth II. Blyth tied the series on Monday, March 5 in Blyth with a 4-3 overtime win. Ryan Chamney opened the scor­ ing after a scramble in front of the Seaforth net assisted by Brian McNichol and Christopher How- son. Seaforth rebounded to take a 2-1 first period lead and the score remained that way into the third period before Blyth scored two goals for a 3-2 lead. Blyth tied the game as Mike Bromley carried the puck the length of the ice and passed in the shot to Jerrod Button who counted the equalizer. Jerrod Button and Benjie Hakkers assisted on the go-ahead goal as Mike Bromley skated in alone from the blueline and scored on a nice deke. Seaforth regrouped as they pull­ ed their goalie and tied the game in the final minute. This set the stage for the second overtime game in a row only this time one goal was all that was scored. Brian McNichol had the honour as he spun around near the blueline and slapped a quick shot toward the goal that eluded the screened goaltender. The fourth game of the series was played in Seaforth on Satur­ day, March 10 and Blyth responded with a 5-4 squeaker to take a 5-3 lead in points. Wilfred Datema and Mike Brom­ ley set up Jerrod Button in the slot for the game opening goal but Seaforth scored three straight goals for a commanding 3-1 lead. Mike Bromley then recorded the natural hat-trick as he scored one goal in the final minute of the first period and gave Blyth a 4-3 lead with two goals in the final two minutes of the second period. Benjie Hakkers and Wilfred Datema assisted on Mike’s first period marker while Tim Lyons set up Mike’s go-ahead goal late in period two. Seaforth tied the game early in the third but Brian McNichol scored his second game winning goal in a row midway through the final frame. Tim Cowan and Ryan Chamney recorded the assists as Brian’s shot changed direction after hitting a Seaforth defender. This 5-4 win enabled Blyth to win the series in Blyth on Sunday, March 11 with either a win or a tie. It was another tight checking game highlighted by strong defen­ sive play as Blyth scored a late short-handed goal to take the game and the series with a 3-2 win. Seaforth opened the scoring with the only goal of period one and increased it to 2-0 early in the second frame. Blyth finally lit the red light up with five minutes left in the second period on a wild scramble at the goal crease.
