Barons lead league final series over Brussels Bulls

series, then took theseries lead Sunday. Hanover was in a position to claim the league championship

The Hanover Barons took a 3-2
game lead in the Western Junior C
Championship Series with a 6-5
overtime win Sunday afternoon in
Hanover. Game six was to be
played last night in Brussels with
the seventh and deciding game if
necessary in Hanover Thursday
night at 8:30 p.m.
Last Thursday night in Hanover
the Bulls, behind the outstanding
goaltending of Jeff Roy took a 2-1
series lead with a 4-2 verdict over
the Barons despite being outshot
45-29.

Crusaders lose first game
against Tavistock in series
The Brussels Crusaders were
back in action last Saturday night
when they played host to the
Tavistock Royals in the first game
of the division final. It was the first
game in the best of a five game
series.
Tavistock opened the scoring
four and a half minutes into the
game with a powerplay goal when
Kevin Albrecht and Brad Zehr set
up Charlie Lupton for the goal. It
was just over a minute later when
Zehr and Albrecht set up Lupton
again for another powerplay mark
er. Brussels cut the lead to one
when Ken Cousins and Tim Fritz
combined to set up Kevin Deitner
for a powerplay goal of their own.
The first period ended 2-1 for
Tavistock.
The Royals added to their lead
two minutes into the second period
when Paul Albrecht scored from
Mike Booth and Kevin Reiger.
Hanover Barons may move to Jr. B
While Brussels Bulls battle Han
over Barons for the Western Junior
“C” crown this week, it may
be the last time the two teams face
each other in league play.
Hanover Barons officially re
quested admission to the Midwes
tern Junior “B” division in a
game’s opening goal, then with
three minutes remaining Corey
McKee’s individual effort gave the
Bulls a 2-0 first period lead.
The game remained 2-0 until 30
seconds into third period play when
Hanover scored on the powerplay.
Three minutes later a Barons
forward intercepted a cross-ice
pass and deked Roy for a 2-2 score.
The Bulls’ coaches called a
time-out and minutes later Steve
Fritz slid home the winner. With
Roy making the key saves Brussels
held the Barons off until Ron
Strome scored an insurance goal
with seven seconds remaining. The
Tavistock powerplay clicked again
when Lupton got his third of the
game with Mark Albrecht and
Kevin Yantzi drawing assists on
the play. Just over a minute later
the Royals added another power
play marker when Paul Albrecht
and Yantzi combined to set up
Reiger for the goal. Tavistock
finished the scoring off for the
period when Brad Stere scored
from Kevin Albrecht and Bill
Matetich, this was also a powerplay
goal and made the score 6-1 after
two periods of play.
There was no scoring in the third
period thus making the final score
6-1 Tavistock and giving them a 1-0
lead in the series. Game two was
Monday night in Tavistock with
game three being back in Brussels
Saturday, March 17 at 8:30 p.m.
The fourth game of the series will
be Monday, March 19 at 8:30 p.m.

Hanover for the Bulls, the only
team to win or tie on Baron ice this
year.
The following night in Brussels a
fired up Barons club skated to a 6-4
win to tie the series at two wins
apiece. Hanover struck early taking
a 3-0 lead to the dressing room
after 20 minutes. «
The Bulls fought back with a Jeff
Douglas goal 66 seconds into the
second period, followed by a J. C.

game to close the gap to 3-2. A
questionable referee’s call saw the
Bulls playing two men down when
the Barons added their fourth goal
for a 4-2 lead after two periods.
Jeff Douglas again brought the
Bulls to within one at the 7:25 mark
but Hanover regained their two-
goal lead 72 seconds later, then
added an insurance goal with 2:30
remaining.
Andrew Weber set up Steve
Vandendool for the final goal of the
game at the 19:46 mark to end the
game 6-4 in Hanover’s favour.
After 30 regular season and 15
playoff games, the Bulls’ season
had come down to a two-out-of-
three series with the Hanover
Barons. Unfortunately for Brus
sels, Hanover gained the advant
age with their 6-5 win Sunday in
Hanover.
The Barons opened quickly scor
ing two early period goals before
the Bulls’ Jeff Douglas connected
on the powerplay to end the first
period scoring at 2-1.
Hanover upped their lead to 3-1
two minutes into second period
action, but the Bulls dug deep and
on a shorthanded goal by Marty
Rutledge, another powerplay goal
by Douglas and an even strength
marker by Steve Vandendool held a
4-3 lead until the 19:01 mark when
Hanover tied the score heading into
third period play.
With eight minutes remaining
Hanover regained the lead but with
the Bulls’ goaltender on the bench,
Rutledge’s second of the game on a
wrap-a-round move tied the score
with 38 seconds remaining to send
the game into a 10-minute over
time.
During a wild scramble around
the Bulls net Hanover scored the
winner at the 6:46 mark and
despite numerous last minute
chances the Bulls fell one shot
short of the equalizer.
. Hanover outshot the Bulls 43-32
in the contest which saw Jeff Roy
take over for Murray Foxton at the
start of third period play due to
sickness.
The winner of this series advan
ces to the All-Ontario quarterfinals
against the winner of the Parry
Sound-Oro series.
