PAGE 20. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 7, 1990. Bly th Novices sweep playoff from Huron Park The Blyth Novice A hockey team won their second round in W.O.A.A. playoffs by defeating Stephen Twp. (Huron Park) in three straight games. The first period of this game showed end-to-end action with each team scoring once. The wheels fell off for Huron Park in the second period as Blyth scored six unanswered goals. Blyth added one more in the third period to bring the score 8 to 1 for Blyth. Jeff Cowan beat the goalie five times and added one assist. Darryl Bromley had a good night with two goals and five assists. Michael Courtney helped the cause with a goal. Amanda Anderson picked up two assists with Michael Ansley adding one. Scott Bromley played solid in net for Blyth and came up big on a penalty shot. The Blyth defence of Jeremiah Hamm, Jason Blyth Pee Wees trail Seaforth BY RUSTY BLADES The Blyth Pee Wees opened their second round group playoff series against Seaforth II with two games last week and sandwiched in an exhibition game against Ripley. In Ripley on Wednesday, Febru ary 28 Blyth built a 9-0 second period lead and coasted the rest of the way with Ripley’s lone goal coming in the final minute of the game. Mike Bromley led the scoring parade as he notched four goals and added an assist. Brian McNi- chol and Jerrod Button reach recorded one goal and two assists. Ryan Chamney scored the first two goals of the game while linemate Christopher Howson added one goal and one assist. Shawn Hakkers and Peter Craig led a strong Blyth defensive effort and defence mates Henry Bos, Jon Collins, Tim Cowan and Wilfred Datema each picked up an assist. Blyth opened their best three out of five playoff series against Sea forth II at home on February 26. Blyth couldn’t get their game untracked as they were upset 5-2. Mike Bromley opened the scoring in the first minute of the game with assists to Benjie Hakkers and Jerrod Button. Seaforth rallied and took a 3-1 lead in the second period before Mike Bromley brought Blyth to within a goal as he scored on a slapshot from outside the blueline with an assist to Wilfred Datema. Seaforth then regained their two-goal lead 20 seconds later and put the game out of reach late in the third period with their second power play goal of the game. This 5-2 loss put Blyth behind the eight even the Sunday, Although managed to keep themselves in the series with a hard fought 2-2 overtime tie. The goaltending was sharp at both ends of the ice with the acrobatic puckstoppers coming up big on several occasions to keep the game scoreless for the first two periods. Seaforth broke the 0-0 deadline one minute and twenty- two seconds into the third period. With just over six minutes left in the game, Blyth’s Brian McNichol scored an unassisted goal to tie the game as his high rising shot was mishandled by the Seaforth goalie and the puck dribbled over the goal line. The game ended 1-1 so a full 10-minute overtime period was played. Seaforth again took a one-goal lead halfway through the extra session. Blyth increased the pressure and it finally paid divi dends with just under two minutes left in the game. Mike Bromley dug the puck out in the slot to Jerrod Button who provided the heroics ball but they hoped to series in game two on March 4 in Seaforth. they didn’t win they with a quick shot that sailed over the fallen goalie. This 2-2 tie still leaves >Blyth trailing Seaforth 3-1 in points in what is now a six point series. QUOTE OF THE WEEK: Former Toronto Maple Leaf coach Mike Nykoluk, talking about Don Cherry: “The only way to broaden Cherry’s mind is with a stick of dynamite in each ear.” Badley, Michael Ansley and Jeff Johnston kept the goals against down to one in each game. Good series team. BLYTH WINS OVER RIPLEY 7-3 The Blyth Novices continued their exciting play Sunday downing the Riply team in a real battle. This was the first game of the W.O.A.A. semi-finals and what a game. Michael Haggitt, playing one of his best games of the year, got Blyth rolling, scoring Blyth’s first goal early in the game, set up by Michael Ansley. However, Ripley tied the game minutes later. Darryl Bromley sur prised the Ripley goalie on a long shot, and Jeff Cowan scored on a nice effort putting Blyth up 3-1 early in the second. Both goals were assisted by Michael Ansley. Ripley roared back with two goals, tying the game up again. Early in the third period. Blyth broke loose in the last 12 minutes of the game with four unanswered goals. Michael Court ney scored a big goal assisted by Chris Carter. Michael Haggitt scored his second, set up by linemate Michael Courtney. Jeff Cowan blew one by the Ripley goalie for goal six, set up by Michael Ansley. Michael Ansley also playing a super game scored Blyth’s last goal with Jeff Cowan picking up the assist. Darrin Mac Donald scored a hat-trick for the Ripley team. Scott Bromley played a very solid game in net helping his defence seal this victory. The final score was Blyth 7 - Ripley 3. The team opened the tournament with a 6-4 win over Brussels as Belgrave took an early lead and held off a determined Brussels team in the third. Tim Robinson scored from Gar rett Knight and Curtis Knight to get Belgrave off to a good start with just a minute and a half gone in the game. Justin Campbell scored from Mathew Cameron and Devon Mof fat to increase the lead. Belgrave scored twice in the last 35 seconds of the period to take a 4-0 lead at the end of one. Tim Robinson scored from Jimmy McCracken and Kyle Anderson and Craig Marks scored an unassisted goal just seven seconds later. The second period was scoreless but Brussels started fast in the third, scoring two goals in the first three minutes. Mathew Cameron’s first goal of his career from Craig Marks and Tyler Fenton widened the Belgrave lead but Brussels came right back with another goal. Tim Robinson scored from Curtis Knight to give Belgrave a three goal lead again before Brussels closed out the scoring. The outcome wasn’t so close in the second game of the tournament as Howick scored seven times in the second and third period for a 7-1 win. Belgrave Atoms play Belgrave Atoms played two games last week downing Blyth “B” but losing to Huron Park. Thursday night found the Blyth team in Belgrave. Corey Moran got Belgrave started followed up by Brent Robinson. Then Blyth added one for themselves. Continued on page 30 Belgrave held the lead at the end of the first period thanks to a goal by Curtis Knight assisted by Tim Robinson. The goaltenders of both teams dominated the first two periods. In the second period Howick scored twice to take the lead for good. Howick poured it on in the third and despite the best efforts of Justin Black in the Belgrave net, scored five goals.
