Bulls beat Goderich, tie Hanover in league final Lonely feeling Goderich Sailors’ goaltender Mike Henry finds himself in the lonely position of facing a Brussels Bulls sharpshooter all aloneduring thedeciding game of the two team’s Western Junior C semi-final in Brussels Wednesday. Brussels won the game 4-2 to take the series. Ron Strome’s three first period ^goals helped lead the Brussels Bulls to a 6-1 win over the Hanover Barons and tied their best of seven Western Jr. C final series at one game apiece. Game three is in Hanover Thursday night at 8:30 with game four scheduled for Friday night in Brussels at 9 p.m. The Bulls return to Hanover for game five on Sunday with game six, if necessary in Brussels Tues day night. Game six of the Goderich semi final series was played a week ago Tuesday on Sailor ice with Goder ich tying the series with a 5-4 come- from-behind win. The loss was the first on the road for the Bulls in the 1990 playoffs. The game remained scoreless until midway through the first period when the two teams com bined for five goals in a four-min ute span, Steve Fritz and J. C. Hewitt were the marksmen for the Bulls as Goderich took a 3-2 lead to the dressing room after 20 minutes. Second period action saw the Bulls score twice on the powerplay for a 4-3 lead heading into third period action. Marty Rutledge scored at the 7:24 mark then set up Corey McKee late in the period for the go-ahead marker. Goderich tied the score early in the third and then with five minutes remaining Captain Dean Lawrie tipped home the winner. The Bulls pulled their goalie for the final minute of play but couldn’t score the equalizer in a game that saw both benches empty at the1 final buzzer as the players ex changed pleasantries. GAME SEVEN The dream of every hockey player from the time he swats a rolled up sock across the living room floor, to playing road hockey on Saturday afternoons, to advan cing through his minor hockey career is to play in game seven, to be the hero whether by scoring “the” goal, making “the” big play or coming up with “the” big save. Wednesday, Feb. 28 in front of a packed arena in Brussels the Bulls played game 7, not in their minds or on village streets, but in an OHA playoff game: winner moves on, loser goes home. The game had everything - fast skating, hard hitting, excellent goaltending and most of all - a home team win! The Bulls opened the scoring midway through the first period on the powerplay as a Marty Rutledge blast trickled through the Goderich goaltender Mike Henry’s pads. Late in the period Steve Fritz intercepted a center ice pass and skated in alone for a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes. Goderich quickly tied the game early in the second period scoring twice in 18 seconds but the Bulls held their composure and with less than five minutes remaining in second period action Corey McKee set up Jason Kraemer on the powerplay for a 3-2 Bulls lead. Midway through the final period Ron Strome scored an insurance goal and with Murray Foxton making the big saves Brussels eliminated the Goderich Sailors with a 4-2 win and advanced to the league finals, a remarkable achievement for a first year club. Friday night in Hanover a tired Bulls club playing its eighth game in 15 nights was brought back to reality by a well-rested Barons hockey team who skated to a 5-1 opening game victory. Despite outshooting Brussels 23-9 in first period action the Hanover Barons were held to a 1-0 lead by the excellent goaltending of Murray Foxton. The Bulls controlled second period play but came up emtpy handed as Hanover scored the only goal of the middle period for a 2-0 lead after 40 minutes of hockey. Twenty-six seconds in third period action Hanover upped their lead to 3-0 and added two more late in the period. The Bulls broke the shutout when Steve Vandendool scored on the powerplay on passes from Ron Strome and Jason Krae mer with 5:35 remaining for a final 5-1 Barons win. Sunday afternoon the Bulls tied the series with a convincing 6-1 victory over the Barons in Brussels. Forty-two seconds into the con test Ron Strome opened the scoring on the powerplay for a 1-0 lead. Hanover tied the game at the 4:50 mark but Strome scored two more for the hat-trick and gave the Bulls a 3-1 first period lead. After a goal-saving stop by Jeff Roy Brussels went end-to-end with Marty Rutledge increasing the lead to 4-1 at 15:35. With a minute to play J. C. Hewitt intercepted a pass inside the blueline and picked the top corner for a 5-1 score after two periods. Seventeen seconds into third period action Hewitt again picked the comer with a powerplay goal to finish with two goals and two assists and give the Bulls a final 6-1 win. Jeff Roy gave the Juniors excel lent goaltending making 33 saves. The winner of the series advan ces to the All-Ontario quarter-finals against the winner of the Georgian Bay Jr. C. loop.
