But the team was no match for Blyth who beat them to win the best out of five series and will now advance to the O.M.H.A. semi-finals against Flesherton. This was game four in a best of five series. The Walpole team sustained a few injuries most notably their star player was out for the season with a bad knee. The Walpole team made a fine effort but without key players Blyth Tykes lose in shoot-out The Blyth Tykes travelled to Lucknow to take part in the Annual Lucknow Legion Tyke Tournament on March 3. Blyth’s first game was against Teeswater who jumped out to a quick 2-0 score. Then with 1:35 left in the first, Blyth got on the scoreboard when Nathan Shannon broke in alone on a pass from Michael Lyons. Teeswater added to their lead early in the second to make it 3-1, but Blyth came back again late in the second when Matt Anderson scored at the 5:29 mark, and then with only 23 seconds left Jeremy VanAmersfoort tied the game at 3-3. Starting the third period Tees­ water again came out strong and took the lead only to have Blyth return strong in the last 10 minutes when Matt Anderson scored second goal of the game Jeremy VanAmersfoort added more. With several saves in Blyth net by Bryce Toll, Blyth went on to win by a score of 6-4. Blyth then met up with a strong Ripley team who had earlier romp­ ed over Lucknow by a 7-11 score. The boys fell behind early at 11:05 of the first period when Ripley took advantage of a break to make it a 1-0 game. Blyth missed numerous close chances during the first period then with 1:28 left in the first Matt Anderson notched Blyth’s first goal assisted by Joel Arthur. Blyth returned strong in the second and at 13:32 Jeremy Van­ Amersfoort gave Blyth a 2-1 lead on an unassisted goal. Jeremy turned just over a minute later on a pass from Shawn Bromley to give Blyth a 3-1 lead. After a second period rest Blyth his and two the E QASSIOADS^ f PAYOFF! j they were no match for the Blyth boys. Mid-way through the first period the local boys exploded for four goals. Chris Stewart opened the scoring with a live solo effort. Brad Anderson then scored assisted by Chris Stewart. Jason Rutledge and Jason McDougall then combined to score the next two for Blyth. returned a little sluggish, hoping to sit on their lead. But at 7:44 Ripley closed the gap to 3-2 and just 3:50 left in the game tied the score at 3-3. Blyth tried desperately to regain the lead in the last three minutes, but missed several key chances, and the game ended in a 3-3 tie. Blyth and Ripley then went into a five man shoot-out. Shooters for Blyth were Bryce Toll, Nathan Shannon, Matt Anderson, Joel Arthur and Jeremy VanAmers- foort. The first being assisted by Chris Stewart and the second a fine solo effort. Chris Stewart closed the scoring early in the third period with assists going to Brad Ander­ son and Mike Salverda. Walpole rallied late in the third period but the fine Blyth defense and solid goaltending of Chris Bromley kept the Walpole team off the score­ board. The Blyth boys now advance to the O.M.H.A. semi-finals against Flesherton. The first game will be on Wednesday, March 7 in Blyth at 7 p.m. second shoot-out using the same shooters. But after the second round of shooters Blyth came up short as they were unable to score on the Ripley goaltender, while the Ripley shooters were able to get two goals past Tyler Stewart who supplied Blyth with outstanding goaltending in the Blyth net. The Tykes wish to thank the fans for support at their games in Lucknow and hope it will continue at their games in Clinton next Thursday, March 8 at 5:30 when they will play Clinton in their first game of the Clinton Tyke Hockey Tournament.
