Vandalism spree nets heavy fines for Walton area man
A Walton area man was hit with
$2100 in fines and ordered to pay
more than $1500 in restitution
following a vandalism spree last
September.

pleaded guilty to smashing down
six highway signs, six mail boxes
and damaging a car left parked at
the side of the road. He also

for driving without license
A former Brussels man received
a 30-day jail term for driving while
his licence was under suspension
and a $250 fine for possession of
marijuana when he appeared in
provincial court in Wingham. Wed
nesday.
Leolucka J. Gagliano of Turn
berry St., Brussels pleaded guilty
to both charges before Judge
R.G.E. Hunter. The court was told
that on Nov. 20, 1989 at about 3:20
p.m. Constables S. J. Shaw and
Larry Yuen of the Wingham de
tachment of the Ontario Provincial
Police stopped a car driven by Mr.
Gagliano driving south on County
Road 12. Constable Yuen had
recognized Mr. Gagliano and re
membered that his licence was
under suspension.
After they stopped the car they
asked Mr. Gagliano for the regi
stration for the car and were told to
look in the glove compartment.
While looking for the registration
they discovered a baggie with a
small amount of marijuana.
Duty Counsel Alan Mill explain
ed that the amount of the drug was
very small and Mr. Gagliano had
forgotten it was there. He said that
prior to 1977 Mr. Gagliano had had
some drug problems but from then
untjl 1987 he was drug free. After
his wife left him in 1987 he started
having trouble again resulting in an
impaired driving charge last year.
He said Mr. Gagliano was employ
ed and would be living in Kitchener
and asked that any jail term be
served there.
Judge Hunter agreed, sentenc
ing him to serve his 30-day
sentence on weekends at the

pleaded guilty of theft under $1,000
for taking items from the car.
The court was told that on
Sunday, Sept. 3, 1989 Mr. Hoegy
was driving north on Highway 4
when he drove off the travelled
portion of the road and knocked
down the highway signs. Cost of
repairing the signs was estimated
at $293.81.

A Grey township man was fined
$150 for possession of hashish and
given 90 days to pay the fine.
James Hinz of RR 1, Monkton
was charged after an incident in
Ethel on June 30, 1989. The court
was told that Constable J. S. Dore
and Sgt. King of the Wingham
Detachment had been called to the
village after complaints of a suspi
cious character riding a bicycle in
the village. When they stopped Mr.
Hinz they discovered he had cani
bis resin (hash).
A Wingham man was fined a
total of $500 for two counts of
Mr. Hoegy apparently drove
north to Wingham and turned east
and travelled into Grey township
where he knocked down the six
mail boxes on concession two.
Mr. Hoegy then came upon a
1978 Chev Malibu that had broken
down and had been left on the side
of the road in Grey township by its
owner. He smashed the front and
possession involving hashish and
marijuana seeds valued at $700.
David Edmound Lisle Watts was
charged after Wingham town
police, Wingham Provincial Police
and OPP from District 6 headquar
ters, acting on a tip, raided the
house on Alice St. in Wingham.
Total value of the drugs seized was
estimated at $700.
John Giousher of Queen St.,
Blyth was fined $250 for an incident
in the Blyth Inn Hotel January 13
when he pulled a fire alarm. The
court was told Mr. Giousher had
been in the hotel and had been cut
off by the staff and on his way out
pulled the fire alarm.

From inside the car Mr. Hoegy
took a blanket, some seat covers
and a cooler. Damage to the car
was $1,091. Value of the stolen
items was put at $150.
Defence attorney Lisso said his
client was prepared to make full
restitution for the damage. He said
he lived with his parents and was
19 at the time of the incident and
had no record. “He had been at a
party and obviously got totally out
of control,’’ Mr. Lisso said.
“Obviously he acted extremely
foolishly that night. It has been an
expensive experience for him.’’
Acting Crown Attorney Jamie
Grant recommended a sharp fine, a
period of probation and restitution
would be appropriate.
Judge R.G.E. Hunter told Mr.
Hoegy he took into account the
guilty plea but - “You’re about as
close to going to jail as you’re going
to get without going to jail.” He
fined him $1,000 for the damage to
the car, $250 for the theft, $250 for
the damage to the highway signs
and $100 for each of the six mail
boxes in addition to ordering him to
pay $1,534.97 in restitution to the
various parties involved. He was
given six months to pay or face a
jail term of 120 days. He was also
placed on probation for a year.
