HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 1990-02-28, Page 34Bly th country music concert features top regional groups Blyth Memorial Hall will be rocking with the sounds of country music under the direction of master of ceremonies, Gary Ballagh on Saturday, March 24 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, March 25 at 2 p.m. This evening of down-home en­ tertainment features the fiddling talents of Frank Leahy, Canada’s open fiddle champion; Canada’s stepdancing sweethearts - the Mc­ Michael Sisters, the music of old Stratford sets new record It was anticipated that when the ^Stratford Festival’s phone lines and ticket counters opened to the general public on the morning on Saturday, February 24, more than <1 ''90 orders and $4.5 million in *11 /bers’ and mailing list sub- ' scribers’ advance ticket orders will have already been processed by the (Festival Box Office. This repre­ sents the highest advance sales, both in terms of dollars and number of orders processed, that the Festival has experienced over 938 seasons. Strong interest is being express­ ed in all 15 1990 productions (Macbeth, As You Like It, Guys & Dolls, Julius Caesar, The Merry Wives of Windsor, Home, Love for Love, Ah, Wilderness!, One Tiger To A Hill, Memoir, Forever Yours, S-Marie Lou, Phaedra, The Knight of I the Burning Pestle, The Lunatic, The Lover & The Poet and a double bill of The Grand Inquisitor and Swan Song). There are plenty of good seats still available, but Festival ticket buyers would be well 1 advised to act quickly if they wish to avoid disappointment. All subsequent meetings and dates will be announced in the Health on the Hill column. tyme fiddler, Gerry Smith with familiar and new tunes of his own; the beautiful voice of Paulette Lippert and the zany barbershop quartet “Here Comes Treble”. Ron Dann acts as musical direc­ tor of this musical extravaganza. He’s also acted as musical director for artists such as Murray McLauchlin, Ian and Sylvia, the Good Brothers and many more. Tickets are on sale now to this fabulous evening of entertainment presented by Good Intention Pro­ ductions and the Blyth Festival of Entertainment series. The McMichael Sisters have danced on The Tommy Hunter Show as well as on stages through­ out Canada from Nova Scotia to Saskatchewan and New York State. Dancing for nearly 17 years togeth­ er, sisters Janice, Karen, Judith and Rhonda live in Wroxeter. Frank Leahy of Waterloo was the Canadian international open fiddle champion in 1984 and he has performed all across Canada and the United States. He was selected to entertain the Queen of England on her visit here in 1984. A violinist and fiddle player, Frank performs both traditional and contemporary music including jazz and he recent­ ly recorded a new album. Gerry Smith of Exeter, another outstand­ ing old tyme fiddler, is also featured in A Touch of Country. He is sometimes known as a ‘‘mara­ thon man” at fiddling contests and step-dancing championships where he has been known to play for hours upon end, popular and new tunes. The renowned barbershop quar­ tet, ‘‘Here Comes Treble” features Gary and Byron Ballagh of Tees­ water, Doug Inglis of Wroxeter and Ben Blackwell of Teeswater. Sing­ ing together for ten years, “Here Comes Treble” won second place last year in the prestigious Ontario District competition of the Society of the Preservation and Encourage­ ment of Barbershop Quartet Sing­ ing in America. This zany and talented quartet uses ten different musical instruments in their reper­ toire. They have performed inter­ nationally, in New York and Michi­ gan with performances in Massey Hall, National Arts Centre and Hamilton Place. Paulette Lippert of Teeswater is an accomplished sin­ ger who has won numerous con­ tests. She is currently studying music at the University of Western Ontario. Gary Ballagh of Teeswater plays master of ceremonies of this musical extravaganza and is also know to CKNX listens as a farm news reporter.
