Bly th A toms ‘storm ’ to series lead over Walpole Saturday, Feb. 24 saw the Blyth Atoms take to the road for game two of their OMHA series with Walpole. Despite the weather warnings the game went on and the travel wasn’t too bad. After a delayed start the Blyth team took to the ice full of enthusiasm and ready to play hockey. Brad Anderson opened the scor­ ing with two goals in the first minute of play. Both goals were assisted by Chris Stewart and Mike Salverda. Late in the first period Walpole replied with a goal of their own. Blyth started out fast with three goals early in the second period. Chris Stewart scored twice with assists going to Mike Salverda, Brad Anderson and Chad Haggitt. Jason Rutledge also scored assist­ ed by Greg Toll. Walpole scored at 7:41 of the period but Blyth replied quickly to maintain their lead. Mike Salverda scored assisted by Brad Anderson and Jason Rutledge. The score after two periods of play was Blyth 6 - Walpole 2. Walpole scored early in the third to come close but Blyth never let up and scored twice in the period to end the game on top of Walpole by an 8 - 3 margin. Brad Anderson scored assisted by Ben Craig and Chris Steawrt and Ben Craig finished the scoring assisted by Jason Rutledge and Jason McDougall. STORM-STAYED Due to the bad weather we decided to stay overnight. The people of Walpole were excellent hosts. They had two hunting lodges which they opened to us and supplied us with blankets and food. The people of Walpole showed what good neighbours are. The next day at 1:30 Blyth played Walpole for game three of the series. Blyth opened the game with a three goal lead in the first period before Walpole scored their first goal with 30 seconds left in the first period. Jason Rutledge scored first from Rob Johnson. Chad Haggitt scored with assists going to Chris Stewart and Brad Anderson. Brad Ander­ son notched the three assisted by Mike Salverda and Chris Stewart. The Walpole team could not get the puck past Blyth’s strong de­ fense for the rest of the game. Blyth scored one more goal in the second period and three times in the third to win the game 7-1 and lead the series two games to one. three, 7 to 1. Games four and five will be Brad Anderson from Chad Haggitt and Darryl Shannon. Blyth Novices lead Huron Park The Blyth Novice team skated away with an easy 10-1 win Thursday to start their best of five series in their second round of the WOAA novice playdowns. Jeff Cowan scored early in this game and Blyth never looked back. Darryl Bromley led the scoring parade with a hat-trick and one assist. Amanda Anderson racked up five points with two goals and three assists. Michael Courtney scored twice and assisted on two, with linemate Michael Haggitt picking up two goals and one assist. Chris Carter helped out on two goals and Jerimiah Hamm and Jeff Johnston each picked up one assist. Scott Bromley had an easy night between the pipes allowing one goal, as Blyth out-shot Huron Park 35 - 5. BLYTH 3 - HURON PARK 1 Game two was played the follow­ ing night in Huron Park and Blyth found this game much tougher to win. The play went end to end but strong goaltending at both ends kept the puck out. Scott Bromley did the job for Blyth. Jeff Cowan got the game’s first goal early in the second on an unassisted effort giving Blyth the 1-0 lead. Darryl Bromley put Blyth up 2-0 minutes later on a shot to the corner set up by Jeff Cowan and Amanda Anderson. Blyth sealed the win with 1:06 left when Amanda Anderson found an open­ ing, scoring on a set up by Jeff Cowan. Huron Park ended the game with a goal with only 17 seconds left. The third game in this series will be played in Huron Park Wednes­ day, February 28 at 7 p.m. Game four, if necessary, will be played in Blyth, Thursday, March 1 at 7 p.m. fcET CASH! s Sell Anythng With WAXT AUS
