Crusaders sweep Grand Valley in 4 games Scramble Grand Valley goaltender Greg Selby dives to knock the puck away from Brussels Cusaders sharpshooter Ken Cousins during action in the third game of the teams’ best of seven series Saturday night in Brussels. Brussels stormed to a 5-0 first-period lead then coasted to an 11-2 win. They completed the series sweep with a win in Grand Valley Sunday. On Saturday, Feb. 24 the Crusa- lers played host to Grand Valley for the third game in their best of seven series. Brussels opened the scoring five minutes into the game when Brian Campbell and Kevin McArter com­ bined to set up Tim Fritz for the goal. Troy Pocaluyko made it to a two-goal lead when he scored on a play from Dave Montgomery and Brian Ten Pas. The Crusaders increased their lead to three when McArter and Campbell set Paul Montgomery up for the goal. There was 50 seconds left in the period when Fritz notched his second of the period, with McArter drawing the assist on the play. Then with only four seconds on the lock Ten Pas scored on a slap shot from the blue line to make the score 5-0. Paul Robinson drew the assist on the goal. The score after one, 5 - 0 Brussels. One minute into the second period Ten Pas scored his second of the game when he completed a set up from Montgomery and Poca­ luyko. Grand Valley broke the shutout six minutes later, but 30 seconds later Brussels got it back when Fritz and McArter set up Campbell for the goal. Ken Cousins and Trev Pocaluyko then combined to set up Dave Montgomery for his first of three goals of the night. Grand Valley cut the lead by one goal before the end of the period to make the score 8-2 after two periods of play. There was only 1:55 gone in the third period when Montgomery scored his second of the game when he finished off a set up by Troy Pocaluyko and Ten Pas. Kevin Deitner added to the Crusader lead after he scored an unassisted goal. A minute and a half later Ken Higgins sent a pass to Fritz and he scored to complete his hat-trick. However, Grand Valley didn’t quit as they scored once again to cut the lead by one. Once again the Crusaders got it back when Camp­ bell and Higgins combined to set up Montgomery for the score to finish off his hat-trick for the night. Grand Valley scored the next two goals before Ken Cousins scored on play from Trev Pocaluyko and Dave Harding to round out the scoring for the game. The final score was 13 - 5 for the Crusaders and gave them a 3-0 lead in the series. Sunday afternoon found the Cru­ saders back on the road to Grand Valley for the fourth game of the series. Grand Valley came out strong at the start of the game and took a 2-0 lead just five minutes into the first period of play. There was a little over six minutes left in the period when Brussels got on the score­ board when Ken Higgins set up Ken Cousins for the goal. Brian Ten Pas and Troy Pocaluyko com­ bined to set up Dave Montgomery for the tying goal. The first period ended 2 - 2. There were nine minutes gone in the second when Dave Stephenson finished off a passing play from Cousins and Paul Robinson. Ste­ phenson then got his second of the game when he completed a set up by Kevin McArter and Trev Poca­ luyko. The second period ended with the Crusaders leading 4-2. The third period scoring was started by Grand Valley as they cut the lead to one goal three and a half minutes into the period. Three minutes later Ten Pas scored on a setup from Stephenson and Robin­ son to regain the two-goal lead. Brian Campbell then scored a minute and ten seconds later to increase the lead to three with McArter drawing the assist on the play. Thirty-four seconds after that Stephenson completed his hat-trick for the night, finishing off a setup by Montgomery. Cousins added to the lead with second of the game, it was an unassisted effort. Cousins and Montgomery then combined to set up Ten Pas for his second of the game and give the Crusaders a six goal lead. Trev Pocaluyko then set up Troy Pocaluyko for the final goal of the game which made the final score 10-3 for Brussels. The victory gave the Crusaders a 4-0 series victory and eliminated Grand Valley from the playoffs. The Crusaders will now wait for the winner between Wellesley, Mil­ verton and Tavistock to be decided before they will know who they will play next.
