Blyth Pee Wees
eliminate Hensall
BY RUSTY BLADES
The Blyth Pee Wees eliminated
Hensall in Group Playoff action last
week with two straight wins.
Blyth hosted the first game last
Monday, February 19 where they
gave Hensall every opportunity to
win.
Hensall built a 4-1 lead before
the Blyth offence caught fire to
score .the final four goals of the
game to shade Hensall 5-4.
After Hensall took a 2-0 lead
Mike Bromley, with an assist to
Henry Bos, cut the lead in half in
the late stages of the first period.
Hensall then built a 4-1 lead in
the second before Mike Bromley
once again got Blyth back in the
game with a short-handed effort
with a nice set up from Wilfred
Datema.
The third period belonged to
Blyth with first Ryan Chamney
cashing in a rebound of Brian
McNichol’s shot. Then Blyth tied
the game as Brian McNichol won
the face-off to Henry Bos whose
slapper from the point eluded
everything in sight.
Late game heroics were provided
by Mike Bromley as he scored the
game winner to complete his
hat-trick with a rocket to the
goalie’s stick side. Jerrod Button
was the play maker on the goal as
he collected an important assist.
The goaltending was strong,
especially in the third as Chris Lee
stopped a penalty shot.
With this 5-4 win Blyth travelled
to Hensall on Wednesday, Febru
ary 21 and swept the series with a
5-3 win.
Mike Bromley once again scored
Blyth’s first goal as he opened the
game scoring with a wrist shot that
rang in off the post. Christopher
Howson increased the lead to 3-0 as
he scored both Blyth goals in the
second period. Shawn Hakkers
if necessary is scheduled for 9:00
tonight (Wednesday) in Brussels.
Last Tuesday the Goderich Sai
lors dominated every aspect of
assisted on his first goal as
Christopher banked a backhand
shot off the goalie from near the
goal line.
Christopher then scored in the
final minute of the period with a
low shot after Brian McNichol’s
pass was tipped by Ryan Chamney
to Christopher at the comer of the
crease. Hensall finally got on the
scoreboard with nine seconds left
in the period but Jerrod Button
nullified that goal with one of his
own in the first minute of the third
period. He easily finished off a
three-way passing play with line
mates Benjie Hakkers and Mike
Bromley as he slid the puck into an
open net.
After Hensall narrowed the lead,
Mike Bromley restored Blyth’s
three goal lead as he poked in
a loose puck in the crease after the
goaltender couldn’t handle Benjie
Hakker’s shot.
Although Hensall scored the
final goal of the game Blyth
eliminated them with this 5-3 win.

and gave the Sailors a 2-1 series
lead.
Corey McKee opened the scoring
49 seconds into the game only to
have Goderich tie the score on the
powerplay at 7:57. A Marty Rut
ledge shorthanded marker was
matched 34 seconds later by a
second Goderich powerplay tally
for a 2-2 tie midway through the
opening period. Goderich surprised
the Bulls with two quick goals late
in the period and by the halfway
point of the game had increased
their lead to 5-2. A Steve Vanden-
dool goal was bettered by three
consecutive Sailor goals late in the
second for an 8-3 Goderich score
after two periods.
Vandendool, with his second of
the game finished the Bulls’ scor
ing early in the third, while the
Goderich penalty-killers ended all
scoring at the 7:10 mark for a
convincing 9-4 Sailor win. Jeff Roy
faced 30 shots in a game that
featured 109 minutes in penalties
called by Goderich native Claude
Daw.
Friday night the Bulls improved
their record to 4-0 on the road with
a solid 4-1 victory in front of a full
house on the lakefront.
Coach Hugh Nichol shuffled his
lineup in hopes of finding a
winning hand and came up with an
“Ace” in captain Ron Strome and
skated forward with a three-point
game.
Five minutes into the contest
Strome gave the Bulls a 1-0 lead
converting a J. C. Hewitt pass. The
lead held until midway through the
game when Strome returned the
favour setting up Hewitt for a 2-0
lead. Minutes later Corey McKee
setup Jason Kraemer on the power
play and Brussels held a command
ing 3-0 lead. Tension mounted
when with 1:53 remaining in
second period action Goderich Cap
tain Dean Lawrie was awarded a
penalty shot after being hauled
dutopoc
down on a breakaway attempt.
Fortunately Murray Foxton came
up big, blocking Lawrie’s shot to
the top comer.
Midway through the final period
Strome setup Marty Rutledge for
the final Bulls goal and the
Brussels squad set about keeping
Goderich off the scoreboard. How
ever this was not ‘‘in the cards” as
a Bulls’ defenceman accidently put
the puck in his own net with 1:09
remaining in the game to thwart
Foxton’s shutout bid.
Sunday afternoon in Brussels the
Bulls gained the series lead with a
6-3 win.
Goderich opened the scoring at
the 11:49 mark of the first period
before Steve Fritz tied the score at
1-1. Goderich regained the lead at
the 15:00 mark and took a 2-1 lead
to the dressing room after 20
minutes.
While the Bulls completely dom
inated second period play, outshoo
ting Goderich 20-2 the only goal
came on an unassisted effort by
Fritz for a 2-2 tie heading into the
third period action.
Goderich opened quickly notch
ing their third goal 23 seconds into
the final period but Ron Stro»^
threaded a pass throughout
Goderich defenders to send Marty
Rutledge in alone to tie the game at
three. With the Bulls carrying the
play they finally received a break
when a Jeff Douglas centering pass
banked in off a skate for a 4-3 lead
with 5:14 remaining. Jason Krae
mer setup Corey McKee for an
insurance goal with four minutes
remaining then scored himself with
71 seconds showing on the clock for
a final 6-3 win.
Murray Foxton came up big
when needed stopping 18 shots
while the Bulls fired 52 shots at the
Goderich goaltender.
The winner of this series travels
to Hanover Friday night for game
one in the best of seven league
final.
