Poets and artists Anti-drug educations big part of new IICBE program Continued from page 15 have already been selected and Mr. Eddy hopes to meet with them just after March break to outline their roles as contact persons and then with them begin to develop an action plan. A Professional Development Day has been scheduled for October 26, and the key note speaker has been selected. Mr. Eddy says that they will also be looking for workshop leaders for the day. There will be some of the original committee members in addition to members from the teaching Federations. In November, five trained people will attend each school to conduct in-service sessions and help educa tors with the plans. For next year, while the program is still in the planning stages there will be further in-depth training for [target groups, and the develop ment of the school Drug Awareness and Action policy in addition to the development of the board’s policy. It is the hope of the Ministry, the school boards, and the educators that this anti-drug strategy will help students gain knowledge about drugs and help them learn how to use this knowledge. They hope that through classroom dis cussion the issue of peer pressure can be undercut as with the assistance of a competent and comfortable educator the perspec tive and the choices become clear er. In a letter to the Board’s director Deputy-Minister Bernard J. Sha piro stated that they needed the support of the school boards in this matter in order to be successful in their endeavour and noted that it was their feeling that “education is the key to prevention’’ in their efforts to reduce the use of illegal drugs.
