Volunteers travel to build church BY USA BOONSTOPPEL On Thursday, two local men left Canada for the Dominican Republic as volunteer construction workers on a two-week mission to build churches. Raymond Verburg of RR 1, Auburn, and John Bos of Brussels lugged along their own tools, their self-paid tickets as well as extra clothing and supplies to donate as they left on their venture. Both members of the Christian Reformed Church (CRC) in Blyth, the pair read about the volunteer- oriented trip in a publication issued sermon about Voyaging volunteers John Bos (left) and Raymond Verburg (right) were packed up and ready to leave on Thursday for the Dominican Republic wherethey will be volunteering their construction skills for two weeks to help build achurch. The pair are part of a 20-member group that will be constructing four buildings for the Dominican people. Blyth United Greeters at the Feb. 25 Sunday service at Blyth United Church were Grace and Kathy McNichol. Ushers were David and Ruth Webster, John Hesselwood and Harvey Snell. In charge of Junior Congregation was Diane Ferguson. The senior choir’s anthem was entitled “Sing a New Song to the Lord” accom panied by Mrs. Phyllis Boak. It was announced that on March 4 at 7:30 p.m. there will be an Ecumenical Lenten Service at the Church of God sponsored by Blyth and Area Ministerial Association. There will be an Evening U.C.W. Unit meeting for the church at 8 p.m. on Feb. 28. Guest speaker will be Cheryl Miller speaking on the topic “Being a Big Brother or Big Sister”. A reminder that March Madness Talent Auction will be held March 2 at 7:30 p.m. The sermon was entitled ‘‘The Transfiguration - Moments of Ela tion”. The scripture reading from Luke 9 (28-36) revealed the story of the transfiguration of Jesus and the appearance of the two prophets Elijah and Moses witnessed by Peter, James and John. This event was especially vivid to the three disciples as they were not expect ing it. It confirmed the presence of God in Christ Jesus and shed light to their physical eyes. Just like the treasured moments in our lives, we, like Peter, wish that we could hold on to them. We would like to by the Trillium League, church’s youth group organization, and decided to join the entourage of 18 people making the trip. Half of the volunteers are young people which are partly sponsored by the Trillium League for their building supplies. The other 10 are young couples. Melville Presbyterian Church BRUSSELS Rev. Cameron McMillan Jesus, united by your grace, let Mr. Verburg was interested in the trip largely because of the feedback he’s heard from other CRC members who have worked in the Dominican Republic, including his parents. “I heard it was an exciting and unique venture,” he said and added that he was interested in the lifestyle of Domin ican natives. ‘‘I want to experience the living conditions down there.” Besides the satisfaction of doing volunteer work, Mr. Bos admitted “I need a vacation and I wanted to go somewhere where I could see the real country and way of life of the people and avoid the tourist trap.” The pair expected they would receive a few days off to explore the town of Sabana Grande de Boys where they will be stationed. It’s a place ‘‘not marked by tourist guides,” said Mr. Bos as they explained that it is a very poor area with primitive conditions. They are taking flashlights and candles with them to combat the limited electri city in the Dominican which is only available sporadically throughout the day. As well, they will be drinking bottled water and may have to use outdoor washrooms due to the limited running water avail able. But most of their time will be spent building the structure they have been assigned to. In their groups of five (the entourage will split into four groups to undertake four different projects) the pair expect to erect and finish the church before they leave. elation make them permanent. Verse 33 Peter, says ‘‘Master, it is good for us to be here. Let us put up three shelters - one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah”. He wanted to make the moment last. Rev. Ramirez said that there is great danger in trying to make these things permanent because it becomes an escape from reality. The disciples had to realize that they must return to the real world to carry on Jesus’ work. Rev. Ramirez said that the authenticity of our faith relies not on our words but how we listen to God’s words. Peter had spoken too soon when he suggested ‘‘building shelters” ra ther he should have been listening to God’s words as we all should do today when He talks to our hearts.
