Many turn out for Friendship Club Milestone Bill Wheeler, left, member of the Western Star 149 Oddfellows Lodge in Brussels received his 25 year jewel from Treasurer Dave Millar last Thursday night at the organization’s regular meeting. Brussels People By Bonnie Gropp Phone 887-9114 or 823-4792 Dr. Murray Workman, son of Jean and the late Sam Workman, was one of the featured guests on a special week-long news feature for Global Television Network. Murray appeared on Monday’s telecast to discuss the problem of doctor “burn-out”. Following graduation from the University of Western Ontario, Murray began his practice in Rainy River, a small town located in northern Ontario on the border of Manitoba and the U.S. As in other northern communities, there has been effort placed on enticing other physicians to come north. Should Murray decide to leave Rainy River the town would be forced to close its hospital leaving the residents with the situation of having to travel one hour to the next closest hospital. This puts pressure on Murray as well as the residents of the tiny northern community, and that was the basis of the Global broadcast. Members of the Brussels Fire Department recently passed the St. John’s Ambulance CPR course to the standards of the Canadian Heart Foundation at the level of Heart Saver. They are: Fire Chief Howard Bernard, John Exel, Doug Sholdice, Ross Somers, Jim Old field, Jack Overholt, Albert Roetcisoender and Murray Mc- Arter. The course was taught by Betty Graber. Holly Dauphin, daughter of Gary and Heather, won the junior divi sion of the F. E. Madill’s public speaking contest at the Wingham Legion on Saturday, February 17. Holly’s topic was something famil iar to most of us ... “Dieting”. She will be competing in Clinton on March 3. Margaret Jarvis, daughter of Frank and Mary Stretton took second place in the senior division for her speech on the environment. Margaret is entering the Lions competition to be held on March 13. Congratulations to both and best of luck. Jeff Huether of Brampton was recently a happy member of the Brampton PCO Maroons Major Novice ‘AAA’ Hockey Club that captured the North American Silver Stick “AAA” Championship in St. Clair Shores, Michigan by defeat ing Toronto Marlboros, Toronto Red Wings, Chicago Franklin Park and Winetka, Illinois. The team has now won all five tournaments including North Bay, Guelph, Chinguacousy, Burlington and the most recent tournament in Michigan. In OMHA playdowns they have defeated St. Catharines and Burlington and will next play Markham then probably London in the finals of the OMHA “AAA” championship. The next tournament is the Preston Tournament Feb. 24 - 25. Euchre results On February 19 the Oddfellows and Rebekah Lodge held their monthly euchre with eight tables in Play. A minute’s silence was held in memory of the late Wilda Baillie - one of our valued members - who passed away recently and our sympathy is extended to her family at this time.
