Bly th Atoms capture WOAA ‘E’ championship Can ’t get it past me This Wallace goaltender wasn’t about to let his opposing Blyth Atom player score a goal but in the end, the Atoms beat Wallace 5-3 to take the WOAA ‘E’ championship Wednesday night in Blyth. Belgrave Atoms suffer big defeat Huron Park found a warm wel­ come in Belgrave Saturday as they rang up a 10-3 win over the hometown Belgrave Atoms. Brent Robinson scored Bel­ grave’s only goal of the first period from Kirk Kreiger and Jeremy Campbell. Eugene Fenton scored in the second from Brian Marks and Brian Marks scored from Brent Robinson but that was all Belgrave could manage as Huron Park hit for 10 goals for an easy win. On Thursday Belgrave had bet- Belgrave curling bonspiel held The annual Belgrave curling club bonspiel was held on Saturday, Feb. 17 at the Wingham Curling Club. Winners of the 9 a.m. draw sponsored by Howson Mills were: skip, Grant Vincent, vice, Marg ter luck as they defeated Blyth 7-3. Brent Robinson scored to tie the score after Blyth had taken an early lead. It was an unassisted goal. He scored again to give Belgrave a lead but Blyth came back with just 12 seconds left to tie the score after the first period. Wayne Fenton scored from Dan Gusso and Ryan Cook scored from Brian Marks to give Belgrave the lead to stay in the second. Blyth closed the gap 16 seconds into the third but Wayne Fenton scored to give Belgrave its two-goal lead back. Brian Marks scored from Brent Robinson and Wayne Fenton scored from Ryan Cook to finish out the scoring. Blyth Atoms won the WOAA “E” championship Wednesday night in Blyth and now take on the Walpole team in All-Ontario play­ downs. The team began its two-game sweep of the championship series with Wallace with a 3-2 win in Wallace Monday, Feb. 12. Wallace took the lead with 1:11 left in the first period but Blyth shut them down for the rest of the period and all of the second. It took until the second period tor Blyth to get untracked offensively but they scored three unanswered goals to take the lead after two. Brad Anderson opened the scoring with 12:50 left as he scored from Chad Haggitt. Six minutes later Jason Rutledge scored from Jason McDougall. With 1:43 left in the period it was again Jason Rutledge from Jason McDougall and Fred Datema to make it 3-1. Wallace scored once in the third period to make the game close but Blyth hung on for the win. Wednesday in Blyth the home team didn’t waste the chance to put the championship away. Again it was Wallace striking first, this time with just 2:25 left on the clock in the first. Again Brad Anderson brought Blyth back early in the second when he scored from Chris Stewart with just 21 seconds gone. Wallace went ahead again four minutes later but with 4:44 left, Chad Haggitt drew Blyth even, scoring from Wes Wilson. With 1:51 left in the period Blyth took its first lead as Jason McDougall scored from Jason Rutledge. Just 30 seconds into the third Wallace tied the game up and the two teams stayed even until with 5:09 left on the clock Chris Stewart scored from Brad Anderson. Brad Anderson iced the win with an unassisted goal with 2:05 left as Blyth skated off with a 5-3 win and the WOAA championship. Sunday Walpole scored five first period goals to virtually wrap up the victory in the first game of the best of five series with Blyth. Walpole got an early lead with 9:39 left in the period but five minutes later Chris Stewart tied the score from Mike Salverda. The next four minutes proved Blyth’s undoing as Walpole popped in four goals before the end of the period. They added to the total with a goal only 13 seconds into the second to build up an insurmount­ able lead. Not that Blyth didn’t try. Brad Anderson got the team back on the right track again midway through the second when he scored from Chad Haggitt and Chris Stewart. Walpole got that one back but with just 33 seconds left in the period Jason Rutledge scored from Jason McDougall and Ben Craig to give Blyth life. In the third, Jason Rutledge scored from Fred Datema before Walpole scored again. Chris Ste­ wart scored from Brad Anderson for Blyth’s final goal as they fell short by an 8-5 score. Blyth travels to Walpole for a 6 p.m. game Saturday then will entertain Walpole in game 3, Sunday at 4:30 o.m. ANNOUNCEMENT Moffat; second, Neil Edgar; lead, Cindy Vincent. Blyth Novice A win and lose exhibition matches The Blyth Novice A hockey team travelled to Lucknow for an exhibi­ tion re-match last Tuesday night and came home 10-6 winners. This game turned out to be a shoot-out with lots of goals being scored. At game’s end Jeff Cowan led the scoring parade picking up six points, three goals and three assists. Darryl Bromley helped the cause with two goals and two assists, and linemate Amanda An­ derson racked up two goals. Michael Courtney beat the Luck­ now goalie twice and Michael Haggitt added a goal and an assist. SEAFORTH DOWN BLYTH 9-2 The Seaforth hockey team came to Blyth on Thursday, Feb. 15 for another exhibition game with both teams waiting for playoff action. This game showed great effort by Blyth until the third period, when the wheels fell off for the Blyth team. The pl-.y was even in the first period with Jeff Cowan scoring the game’s first goal with Michael Courtney drawing the assist, but Seaforth came back with three straight goals. The second period belonged to Blyth as they out-played Seaforth but only managed one more goal. Once again Jeff Cowan scored with Michael Courtney picking up the assist. With the score 3-2 for Seaforth both teams took a ten minute break. Seaforth caught Blyth flat- footed early in the third period for two fast goals and the Blyth wheels fell off. Seaforth scored four more in the third period adding the score 9 - 2 for Seaforth. Blyth will be starting their second round of play-offs this Thursday, Feb. 22 against a fast­ skating Huron Park team in Blyth at 7 p.m. Belgrave Tykes clobber Hensail Belgrave Tykes scored early and often Saturday as they sent the visiting Hensail Tykes home with a 13-2 defeat. The game was less than two minutes old when Tim Robinson scored from Craig Marks to give Belgrave the lead. Twenty-seven seconds later the same combination worked again to make it 2-0. Nine seconds later Belgrave got the winning goal as Curtis Knight scored from Justin Black for a 3-0 lead.
