The Brussels “Sprouts” were defeated by the home team 11 - 1. Blyth Atoms lead WOAA final The Blyth Atom Reps have finished a very successful season. They ended regular season play with a record of 11 wins, 4 losses and 1 tie. Their four losses were to the Stephen Twp. team. They opened their playoffs against Zurich. They easily defeat­ ed this team with scores of 8-4 and 12-3. This meant that the Blyth boys were up against the team from Stephen Twp. Their four losses during the regular season were all to this same team. On Tuesday, Feb. 6 Blyth tra­ velled to Stephen Twp. for game one. The fans had a very exciting game to watch as both teams were in top form. The play was end to end during a scoreless first period. Late in the second period Stephen Twp. opened the scoring with a power-play goal with 1:48 left in the period. Both teams kept up the end-to- end pace during the third period and both goalies were called upon to make excellent saves. With 2:02 left in the third period. Jason McDougall tied the score for Blyth by slapping a rebound past the Stephen Twp. goalie. Jason Rut­ ledge took the initial shot after being set up by Darryl Shannon. Stephen Twp. applied good pres­ sure for the last two minutes but were unable to get the puck past Blyth goalie Chris Bromley. The teams then faced off for a 10-minute overtime period. The play was again end to end but both goalies were equal to the task. The score remained tied at 1-1. On Wednesday night the series resumed in Blyth. The Blyth boys seemed eager and ready to face this seemingly unbeatable team from Stephen Twp. Brad Anderson surprised the Stephen Twp. goalie at 9:25 of the first period by sliding a perfect pass from Mike Salverda past him. This seemed to encour­ age the Blyth boys and excellent forechecking and backchecking really slowed the Stephen Twp. team. At 3:05 in the first period Chris Stewart passed to Brad Anderson who relayed the puck to Mike Salverda. Mike made no mistake as he shot the puck hard between the Stephen Twp. goalie’s legs, the first period ended with Blyth being up by two goals. The same three boys combined for Blyth’s third goal as Chris Stewart finished an excellent pass­ ing play from Brad and Mike. Stephen Twp. scored their first goal on the power-play at 5:47 of the second period. Jason McDou­ gall replied quickly for Blyth on another fine passing play with assists going to Darryl Shannon and Jason Rutledge. Early in the third period Brad Anderson scored again assisted by Mike Salverda. Chad Haggitt de­ flected a point shot from Greg Toll to make the score 6 - 1 in Blyth’s favour only 20 seconds later. Late in the third period Stephen Twp. rallied to score two unanswered goals but it was too little too late as the Blyth team ended the game up on the top of a 6 - 3 score. Game 3 of the series was played in Blyth on Saturday afternoon. The play in the first period was very tentative as both teams looked for each other’s weakness. Neither team scored as both teams were checking very tightly. Early in the second period Ste­ phen Twp. took a penalty for body contact. Blyth applied good pres- Blyth Tykes defeat Brussels, The Blyth TykeS displayed an excellent game of both defence and offence as they skated past Brus­ sels by a score of 11-1. Getting goals and assists for Blyth were Aaron Bakker with three goals and one assist, Jeremy VanAmersfoort, two goals, two assists; Nathan Shannon, two goals, one assist; Michael Lyons, one goal; Dean Wilson, one goal; Matt Anderson, one goal and Ross Clark, one goal. Blyth’s next game on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 10:00 in Blyth will be The Brussels Crusaders were back on the road to Grand Valley Feb. 6 for their final game of the regular season. A Brussels victory would give them first place in their division and home ice advantage in the playoffs. Brussels opened the scoring three minutes into the game when Kevin Dietner converted a set up from Dave Stephenson and Rob Cardiff. Grand Valley tied the score just 25 seconds later, but Tim Fritz scored four minutes after that to regain the lead with Kevin McArter and Bill Haines drawing assists. Once again the Tornadoes came back and tied the score at 2-2. The Crusaders regained the lead with three minutes left in the period when Troy Pocaluyko set up Brian Ten Pas for the go ahead goal. The first period ended 3-2 for Brussels. Brussels increased the lead to two goals when Troy Pocaluyko scored on a set up by Ken Cousins and Tim Fritz. Dave Montgomery added to the lead for the Crusaders Curling Club ends season’s second draw The second draw of the Brussels Mixed Curling Club ended recently with the following teams winning. First, with 48 points was the team of Brad Speiran, Jean Old- sure and a fine passing play by Chad Haggitt and Jason Rutledge allowed Jason McDougall to slide the puck past the Stephen Twp. goalie. After killing another penalty the Stephen Twp. team was caught on a bad line change which allowed Darryl Shannon to pick up a loose puck past a fallen goalie. An assist was given to Chris Stewart on this fine effort by Darryl. Jason McDougall scored again for Blyth with assists going to Darryl Shannon and Jason Rut­ ledge. With 4:55 left in the second period Stephen Twp. scored on a fine passing play. In the third period both teams played hard but the effect of three games in less than a week showed its toll. Both teams made mental errors which resulted in many penalties. Neither team was able to score although Stephen Twp. held the edge in play Blyth’s strong defence and goal­ tending were able to keep the Stephen Twp. off the scoreboard. The final score fro the game was Blyth 3, Stephen Twp. 1. Blyth won the series 5 points to 1. Blyth now goes to Wallace to play in the WOAA final. Game one was played in Wallace Monday night, with Blyth winning 3 - 2. Game two is back in Blyth on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. against a tough Goderich squad who defeated Blyth 9 - 0 the first game of the season. The Tykes have imporved a lot since that game and with the continuing good fan support are expected to do much better against Goderich this time around. l/v v/ panricipacTian 30 seconds later with Haines drawing the assist. Grand Valley cut the lead by one goal before Montgomery scored his second of the game to give the Crusaders a 7-3 lead after two periods of play. Grand Valley came out in the third period and scored two goals in the first five minutes of the period to cut the lead to 7-5. The Crusaders regrouped and regained a three goal lead when Cousins finished off a set up from Fritz and Stephenson. Rob Cardiff then in­ creased the Brussel lead when he completed the passing play from Fritz and Campbell. One minute and 30 seconds later Stephenson scored to make it a five-goal lead with Fritz and Deitner drawing assists on the play. They will open their first round of the playoffs Saturday, Feb. 17 at home against Grand Valley. Game time is 8 p.m. The second game will be Sunday, Feb. 18 at 7:30 p.m. in Grand Valley.
