Blyth Atoms lead WOAA final
The Blyth Atom Reps have
finished a very successful season.
They ended regular season play
with a record of 11 wins, 4 losses
and 1 tie. Their four losses were to
the Stephen Twp. team.
They opened their playoffs
against Zurich. They easily defeat
ed this team with scores of 8-4 and
12-3.
This meant that the Blyth boys
were up against the team from
Stephen Twp. Their four losses
during the regular season were all
to this same team.
On Tuesday, Feb. 6 Blyth tra
velled to Stephen Twp. for game
one. The fans had a very exciting
game to watch as both teams were
in top form. The play was end to
end during a scoreless first period.
Late in the second period Stephen
Twp. opened the scoring with a
power-play goal with 1:48 left in
the period.
Both teams kept up the end-to-
end pace during the third period
and both goalies were called upon
to make excellent saves. With 2:02
left in the third period. Jason
McDougall tied the score for Blyth
by slapping a rebound past the
Stephen Twp. goalie. Jason Rut
ledge took the initial shot after
being set up by Darryl Shannon.
Stephen Twp. applied good pres
sure for the last two minutes but
were unable to get the puck past
Blyth goalie Chris Bromley.
The teams then faced off for a
10-minute overtime period. The
play was again end to end but both
goalies were equal to the task. The
score remained tied at 1-1.
On Wednesday night the series
resumed in Blyth. The Blyth boys
seemed eager and ready to face
this seemingly unbeatable team
from Stephen Twp. Brad Anderson
surprised the Stephen Twp. goalie
at 9:25 of the first period by sliding
a perfect pass from Mike Salverda
past him. This seemed to encour
age the Blyth boys and excellent
forechecking and backchecking
really slowed the Stephen Twp.
team.
At 3:05 in the first period Chris
Stewart passed to Brad Anderson
who relayed the puck to Mike
Salverda. Mike made no mistake as
he shot the puck hard between the
Stephen Twp. goalie’s legs, the
first period ended with Blyth being
up by two goals.
The same three boys combined
for Blyth’s third goal as Chris
Stewart finished an excellent pass
ing play from Brad and Mike.
Stephen Twp. scored their first
goal on the power-play at 5:47 of
the second period. Jason McDou
gall replied quickly for Blyth on
another fine passing play with
assists going to Darryl Shannon
and Jason Rutledge.
Early in the third period Brad
Anderson scored again assisted by
Mike Salverda. Chad Haggitt de
flected a point shot from Greg Toll
to make the score 6 - 1 in Blyth’s
favour only 20 seconds later. Late
in the third period Stephen Twp.
rallied to score two unanswered
goals but it was too little too late as
the Blyth team ended the game up
on the top of a 6 - 3 score.
Game 3 of the series was played
in Blyth on Saturday afternoon.
The play in the first period was
very tentative as both teams looked
for each other’s weakness. Neither
team scored as both teams were
checking very tightly.
Early in the second period Ste
phen Twp. took a penalty for body
contact. Blyth applied good pres-
