Overloads still hot Battling players and referees marked much of the match between the Brussels Bulls and Walkerton Blackhawks on Friday night in Brussels as referees called 225 penalty minutes and eight fighting majors. The Bulls lost to Walkerton 5-4 but rallied back on Sunday in Walkerton to eliminate Walkerton from the playoffs with a 7-1 win. Bulls beat Hawks, meet Sailors The Brussels Jr. C Bulls elimin­ ated Walkerton with a 7-1 victory on Blackhawk ice Sunday after­ noon. The win gives the Bulls the best of five series three games to one. Unlike previous games Brussels quickly went on the attack notching four first period goals starting with Steven Vandendool’s powerplay market at 6:31. Jeff Douglas tallied Sports Bly th Novices defeat Wallace in playoff The Blyth Novice “A” hockey team skated to a 3-1 win over Wallace in game one of the W.O.A.A. playoff series. In the first period, both teams played a slow cautious defensive game and no goals were scored. Jeff Cowan opened the second period using his speed to split the Wallace defence, and beat the Wallace goalie Reed Norman. Five minutes later Jeff Cowan repeated his goal and put Blyth up 2 - 0. Wallace made the game close again scoring second’s later bring­ ing them within one. With three minutes left in the second period Jeff Cowan picked up a natural hat-trick putting Blyth up 3 to 1 on a nice pass from Darryl Bromley. The third period of this game looked like the first and once again no goals were scored. Scott Bromley played a solid game between the pipes with the Blyth defence helping him out. BLYTH WINS GAME TWO 4-0 Blyth Novice “A” travelled back twice including a short-handed effort, then set up J. C. Hewitt for a 4-0 lead. A glaring defensive error gave Walkerton their only goal of the game with a minute remaining in the period. The Bulls penalty-killers domi­ nated second period play holding Walkerton scoreless on numerous opportunities and notched their second short-handed goal of the to Wallace Saturday, Feb. 10 for a rematch and came home 4-0 winn­ ers. Darryl Bromley started Blyth’s first rush, slipping around the Wallace defence and let go a blast that was nicely tipped in by linemate Jeff Cowan, for the game’s only first period goal. Jeff Cowan scored the only goal in the second period finishing off a pass from the corner by Darryl Bromley. Wallace tried hard to come back, forechecking Blyth deep in Blyth’s end. But =Scott Bromley played solid and so did his defence Michael Ansley, Jeff John­ ston, Jason Badley and Jeremiah Hamm. Blyth took the play to Wallace early in the third trying to ice this game. Jeff Cowan picked the top corner once again this time set up by Amanda Anderson and Michael Courtney to put Blyth up 3-0. Jeff Douglas completed his hat- trick with seven minutes remaining then combined with goaltender Jeff Roy to set up J.C. Hewitt’s second of the game with 4:30 showing on the clock. The Bulls took a 1-0 series lead with a 9 - 8 come-from-behind overtime win last Tuesday night. Walkerton held period leads of 3 -1 and 5 - 2 as they completely shut down the Bulls offence holding Brussels to 11 shots after 40 minutes of play. Steven Vandendool scored 18 seconds into the third but Walker­ ton quickly restored their three- goal lead with a goal at the 6:00 mark. The Bulls stayed alive with two powerplay goals by J.C. Hewitt at 9:12 and 13:30 and with goal­ tender Murray Foxton on the bench, Corey McKee scored the equalizer with 15 seconds remain­ ing on the clock to send the game into a 10 minute overtime period. Four minutes into overtime Continued on page 35 The Blyth Radfords Overloads Oldtimers stretched their unbeaten streak to 18 games with three victories this past week. The Overloads scored four goals late in the game to defeat Port Albert 5 to 4. Terry Rutledge’s end-to-end rush resulted in the winning goal with two minutes to play. Other goal scorers were Wayne McDougall, Gary Courtney, Barney Stewart and Bruce Mason. The Overloads travelled to Wing­ ham to play the Rockers and again had to come from behind to earn the victory. Three goals in the last five minutes of play produced a 6-4 win. Goal scorers were Barney Stewart, three; Wayne McDougall, two; and Gary Courtney, one. The Overloads travelled to Luck­ now for a return engagement against Port Albert. The Blyth squad used an early offensive attack to build up a lead and then coasted to a 12 to 6 victory. Overloads goals were scored by Barney Stewart, four; Wayne Mc­ Dougall, two; Bryan Black, two; Tom Black, two; Gary Courtney, one and Tony Van Bakel, one. The Overloads extended road trip continues with games in Huron Park on Friday and Ayton on Sunday.
