A Thank You was given to the Brussels re-forming business assoc. About 28 interested Brussels area businessmen and merchants attended a meeting in Brussels on Monday. February 5, to discuss the revitalization and reformation of the currently defunct Brussels Business Association. A survey was circulated to a cross-section of businesses in town early in the month to discover how many would be in favour of establishing the organization again. The BBA was once active within the community but fizzled early in the decade. John Harrison, who along with Ron Clarkson instigated the meeting, felt the idea was well-received. “Of the 24 surveys distributed, there were 22 in favour of the concept.” Mr. Harrison cited several rea sons for the move, not the least of w'hich being the need to get. together on improving business. “With the coming of Huronview, there are going to be many opportunities opening up and if we don’t take advantage others may come along who will,” he said. through non-profit Non-profit housing—everyone benefits Canada housing. build the future bp 1365 Richmond Rd Ste 300 Ottawa K2B 6R7 (613) 820-8305 If long distance dial toll-free 1-800-267-6108 1191 Lansing Ave Sudbury P3A 4C4 (705) 560-6350 If long distance dial toll-free 1-800-461-1190 When LeoGiesbrecht gets up to dance he’s not kidding, as he demonstrated Saturday nigh tat the Brussels Optimist's dance. Mr. Harrison stated that he would like to see the downtown core improved cosmetically as well. “We know it needs to be done and I feel it is up to the businesses to do it - the onus is not on the town to clean it up. If we were unified in this situation we could beautify the downtown immensely.” Nancy Exel of Pannell, Kerr and McGillivray, was the speaker at the meeting. She went over the Goods and Services Tax with the people and described what its implications would be for the various businesses in town. According to Ms. Exel there are three types of products covered by the GST-taxable, tax-free, and tax-exempt - and in order for merchants to ascertain the impact this will have on them they must first be aware of what type of product they have. She explained that services like dentists are tax-exempt while, for example, most items in a hardware store are taxable. Mr. Harrison felt that this “ice breaker” meeting was positive and opened a lot of eyes. “We are very pleased with the turnout and got a lot of new ideas. My big concern now is that there will be involve ment on everyone’s part. Everyone is going to have to pull their own load as far as their share of the work if they are going to be part of the association.” There will be a formation meeting of the new BBA held in the future though the date at this time has not been establish ed.
