Sports Blyth boys volleyball team places second in tournament Crusaders in race for first place by Brian Machan and John Ramirez On Saturday, February 3, 1990 the Blyth Public School boys’ volleyball team travelled to C.H.S.S. in Clinton to participate in the Central Regional Volleyball Tournament. There were six schools involved in the tournament. The boys played exceptionally well and won four out of five matches and placed second overall. The final standards of the tour­ nament were: first, Clinton P.S.; second, Blyth P.S.; third, Huron Centennial P.S.; fourth, Seaforth P.S.; fifth, Hullett C.P.S.; sixth, Vanastra P.S. The team members were: Brian Machan, John Ramirez, Jerrod Button, Mike Bromley, Jamie Bromley, Mark Pawitch, James McNichol, Shayne Sholdice, Brian McNichol, Andrew Wharton, Henry Bos, Mike Johnson, Greg Toll, Chris Howson. The team members would like to take time out to say thank you to all the coaches and the people who have organized this tournament. Brussels Bonspiel MEN’S OPEN February 19,1990 Sponsored by: 9 a.m. draw - Huron Feeding Systems 11 a.m. draw - CIL Agromart FOR ENTRIES CONTACT STEWART STEISS, 887-6670 Friday, Feb. 2 the Brussels Crusaders were supposed to travel to Seaforth for a game with the Seahawks but Seaforth folded their team earlier in the week, thus cancelling the game. Brussels how­ ever was awarded the two points because they are still in the race for first place overall. All other teams who had games left with Seaforth were also awarded the two points for their games. Saturday night saw the team playing host to the Arthur Tigers. Arthur opened the scoring 3:20 into the game when Eck Palmer scored from Ray Hutchison. Brussels tied the score six minutes later when Dave Stephenson and Kevin Deit- ner combined to set up Ken Cousins for the goal. Cousins scored the go-ahead goal four minutes later Stephenson drawing to only assist on the play. The first period ended with the Crusaders leading 2-1. Two minutes into the second Arthur tied the score when Brad Smith scored with assists going to Jeff Bauman and Paul Epoch. Brian Campbell restored the Crusaders lead 10 minutes later with Mike Watson and Paul Mont­ gomery drawing the assists. The second period ended with the Crusaders holding a 3-2 lead. Once again a little over two minutes into the third period Arthur tied the score ' <h Tom O’Donnell scoring an u lassisted goal. The Crusaders regained the lead a couple of minutes later when Kevin McArter scored on a set up by Tim Fritz and Trev Pocaluyko. Fritz increased the lead to two goals when he finished off a play from Campbell and Pocaluyko. However Arthur didn’t give in as they scored a minute and a half later with Hutchison getting the goal from Smith and Fred Locking to cut the lead to one. Then Epoch tied the score with John McCabe and Bauman drawing the assists. This made the final score 5 - 5. Sunday saw the Crusaders on the road to Grand Valley for a 7:30 start. One minute into the game Brus­ sels opened the scoring when Brian Ten Pas converted a pass from Mike Watson. Tim Fritz and Kevin McArter then combined to set up Brian Campbell to increase the lead to two. Grand Valley cut the lead by one before Dave Montgomery fin­ ished off a play from Troy Pocalu- ko and Ten Pas. The first period ended with Brussels holding a 3 - 1 lead. The Crusaders increased their lead to 4 - 1 when McArter and Campbell set up Fritz for the score. Grand Valley once again scored to cut into the lead but Bill Haines regained the margin when he scored from Fritz and McArter. Two minutes later Ken Cousins scored on a set up from Mike Watson and Dave Stephenson. Grand Valley finished the second period scoring with 22 seconds left to make the score 6 - 3 for Brussels after two periods of play. The Valley cut the lead to two goals a little over a minute into the third. It was four minutes later when Montgomery scored again to regain the three goal lead with Ten Pas and Pocaluyko drawing assists on the play. Grand Valley made it a two-goal difference again just 26 seconds later, but 20 seconds after that Campbell scored his second of the game with McArter and Rob Car­ diff drawing assists on the play. Mark Harding then added to the lead when he finished off a play from Cousins and Kevin Deitner. Brussels then finished off the scoring with a little over four minutes later when Fritz and Cardiff combined to set up a goal by McArter to make the final score 10 - 5 for the Crusaders. The Crusaders will travel back to Grand Valley on Tuesday, Feb. 6 for a 9 o’clock game which will decide first place in their division and possibly first place overall in the league. There are no playoff dates set yet as they are not sure who their opponents will be at this time. Blyth Novices beat home teamBrussels Brussels scored early in this game on a goal-mouth pile-up but- the rest of the game belonged to Blyth. Jeff Cowan led the points parade picking up six, and Darryl Bromley getting three. Michael Courtney, Michael Haggitt and Amanda An­ derson each picked up two points each with Jason Badley and Michael Ansley holding out with one point each. On Sunday, Feb. 4 Blyth travell­ ed to Clifford and took part in their Funfest Day. This would be a real battle as two of the top E-teams locked horns. The first two periods were fast but very offensive. Clif­ ford scored first early in the game but Blyth tied the score late in the first, Jeff Cowan beating the Clifford goalie on a set-up by Darryl Bromley. Blyth took a 2-1 lead early in the third. This opened the flood gates once again with Jeff Cowan and Darry’ Bromley combining. Michael Courtney showed his scor­ ing touch adding two more goals, both set up by Michael Haggitt. Blyth seemed to have the game in hand when Jeff Cowan scored an unassisted goal putting Blyth up 5 to 1. With six minutes left in the game Blyth got careless and Clif­ ford scored three straight goals making the score 5 to 4. Chris Carter scored a big goal with two minutes left with Michael Courtney and Michael Haggitt setting up the play to seal the victory. The final score was Blyth 6, Clifford 4. Scott Bromley played well in net helped out by solid defensive pairings of Michael Ansley and Jeff Johnston and Jason Badley and Jeremiah Hamm.
