Local Amnesty group plans activities The local members of Amnesty International, who have been meet ing as a “group-in-formation” for two years, became accredited as Group No. 159 in December, 1989. To gain this status, the body had to have an evaluation by an outside representative approved by the Canadian executive in Ottawa and certified by the international secre tariat in London, England. A letter received in Goderich containing the news of the elevation praised the members for the high level of their activities during the formative years. Meetings are held on the fourth Monday of each month in the board room of the assessment office, Gloucester Terrace, Goderich, at 7:30 p.m. The January meeting received reports from the various co-ordina tors giving details of last autumn’s activities: Central America Special Action Youth Action Network, Ur gent Action Network, Campaign for Abolution of the Death Penalty Worldwide, a Human Rights Day Rally in Suncoast Mall and a street corner solicitation. The members who participate in the monthly meetings are aware that there are many more A.I. members in the area who protest violations of human rights world wide by writing letters from their homes, and will invite them to a special members night in 1990. Tim said he’s found something to give added interest in the Games. “I sit there and try to figure which of the competitors are on steroids,” he said. THURSDAY: Billie says he’s come up with a new money making scheme he wants to try on the Prime Minister. “It’s a telephone book,” he said, “with all the numbers of judges removed so cabinet ministers can’t get into trouble calling them.” FRIDAY: Ward said there was always a job on newspapers he thought he would like, the guys who get to go down to Florida and cover spring training for the ball teams. But now, he says, the guys on the news side seem to have come up with their own way to get to go south just like the sport writers. “How’d you like to be the Toronto Star reporter who gets to go to Miami and sit around outside a hospital so he can take pictures of any of Harold Ballard’s relatives going in to visit him?” “I don’t know,” Julia said. “With Yolanda around you just might need danger pay.” In an effort to give some small reward to those who contribute so much to our community, The Citizen is sponsoring a Citizen of The Year award-one for the Brussels area and one for the Blyth area.
