Wallace leads playoff series over Blyth PeeWees BY RUSTY BLADES The Blyth Pee Wees had yet another busy week of hockey as they finished off their schedule with two games and suffered an opening game 6-2 loss to Wallace in WOAA playoff action. The Pee Wees travelled to Kurtzville on Wednesday, January 24 and, although they lost 6-2, the game was much closer than the score because the first Wallace goal still hasn’t crossed the goal line and the final goal was scored with only one second left in the game. Wallace’s Todd Norman played a huge role in staking his team to a 5-0 early second period lead with two goals and two assists. Blyth countered with two powerplay goals before the period ended but that was as close as they could get. Brian McNichol put Blyth on the scoreboard first as he buried a loose puck from close range. Tim Goderich Atoms top Belgrave by 6-1 score Goderich Atoms proved just too powerful for their hosts from Belgrave January 20 as they skated to a 6-1 win. Goderich scored the only goal of the first period then added four more in the second to take a commanding lead. Brian Marks scored Belgrave’s only goal of the game midway through the second with Eugene Fenton getting the assist. Goderich closed out the scoring with a goal in the third. It was a happier result January 24 when Belgrave played an exhibi tion game against Belmore and skated off with an 8-0 win. Brent Robinson started the scor ing in the first period with a goal from Brian Marks. Exactly four minutes later Robinson returned the favour for Marks as they combined for the second goal. Just over a minute later Corey Moran scored an unassisted goal for Belgrave. After a scoreless second period Wayne Fenton scored from Eugene Fenton and Corey Moran to open the third. The Fentons combined for the second of the period with Wayne scoring from Eugene three minutes after their first goal. Brent Robinson scored from Jeremy Campbell with 4:04 left in the game, then Corey Moran scored from Wayne Fenton and Eugene Fenton scored from Moran and Wayne Fenton to end the scoring. Belgrave will return to Belmore February 5 to see if Belmore can gain revenge. Belmore was short- handed for the game and was experiencing playing on natural ice for the first time. Lyons notched the second goal as he pounced on the rebound of Mike Bromley’s shot and whipped a shot through a maze of legs. Jerrod Button picked up an assist as his pass to Bromley set the stage for the eventual goal. Unfortunately, Blyth sniper Mike Bromley was lost for the rest of the game with elbow problems as he was unceremoni ously dumped after the goal was scored. No penalty was called on the play. Wallace added one more as time expired to open a one game lead in this best of three series. The Pee Wees finished off their regular home schedule on Monday, January 22 as they were bombed by an enthusiastic Elma-Logan squad 10 - 4. Blyth opened the scoring 45 seconds into the contest as Mike Bromley notched the goal on a rebound of Benjie Hakker’s shot. Sporadic goaltending led to Blyth’s demise as the visitors scored the final four goals of the period. Ryan Chamney brought Blyth with in range early in the second as he deked the goalie on a breakaway with assists to Brian McNichol and Peter Craig. The second period finished with a flurry as seven goals were scored in five minutes. Elma-Logan had five of them as they went ahead by a 9-4 count after two periods. Mike Johnston scored Blyth’s third goal on a nice wrist shot with assists to Mike Bromley and Tim Lyons. Marc Bricker and Mike Bromley assisted on Blyth’s final goal as Tim Lyons positioned himself at the edge of the crease and took the rebound off the back boards and deposited the puck into the goal. Things settled down in the third with only one goal being scored as Elma-Logan shocked the home towners 10 - 4. The team completed their regu lar schedule on Friday, January 26 as they visited Wingham where they powered their way to a 4-1 win. After a scoreless first period Blyth counted the only goal of the second period with a power play effort. Wilfred Datema’s point shot was tipped by Ryan Chamney to Brian McNichol at the corner of the crease and Brian muscled the shot home. Jerrod Button upped the score to 2-0 early in the third as he was set up beautifully in the slot by Peter Craig. After Wingham cut their lead in half, Tim Lyons restored Blyth’s two-goal lead on another power play. Jonathan Collin’s shot was redirected by Jerrod Button to Tim Lyons in the slot where he scored on a low drive. The power play once again proved fruitful in the last minute of the game. This time it was Jerrod Button who tucked the puck up stairs with Jonathan Collins and Tim Lyons assisting on the goal as Blyth cruised to a 4-1 victory.
