Crime Stoppers gets results in first 20 months January has been designated as Crime Stoppers Month and since its inception 20 months ago the Huron County division has proven itself to be keeping pace with the International Crime Stoppers or­ ganization. Worldwide the average effective­ ness of Crime Stoppers is to spend one dollar for rewards for every $19 recovered in property and narcotics and to spend $58.22 for every case solved. Constable Wayne Moulton of the Goderich Ontario Provincial Police is the Crime Stoppers police co-ord- inator for the County. He has attended international meetings and has met his peers from districts in Guam, England and Australia and has discovered that Canada has one of the more successful branches of the organization. Moulton states that in Huron, Crime Stoppers has recovered $35,000 in narcotics and $12,000 in stolen property since March of ‘89. In total since the program started, there has been $63,500 in drugs and property recovered. Thirty-six cases have been cleared that Moulton insists would never have been solved without tips from anonymous callers to Crime Stop­ pers. These resulted in charges of breaking and entering, auto thefts, arson, forgery, fraud and even an armed robbery. A board of 15 directors runs the organization and part of their duties are to ascertain whether an informant is deserving of a reward and if so to deliver it to them. Directors receive a summary of the facts of each case and the property recovered, the serious­ ness of the case and the risk involved for the informant. The maximum reward is $1,000.Crime Stoppers has paid $1,800 in rewards. Business and Professional A director is chosen to drop off the reward at a site of the informant’s choosing. If the infor­ mant chooses Wingham, for ex­ ample, a director from the opposite part of the county will be selected to preserve the anonymity of the caller. The informant is given a number on the first call and uses it for each subsequent call. Names or other identifying information are never known to police or directors. Since its inception Huron County Moulton would like to see more people using the drug line as he feels it is a good way to clear up the drug problem and being anony­ mous no one has to fear retribution from the pushers. He believes that most people don’t call because they don’t think they have enough information or evidence for the police to act, but every bit of information helps, he says.
