Blyth Pee Wees bounce back from big loss, beat Seaforth BY RUSTY BLADES The Blyth Pee Wees had a full slate of games last week as they played four games in five days. The week had a disastrous start as Clinton blew the locals right out of the pond on Monday, January 15 with a convincing 13-1 wipe out. The only mark on an otherwise perfect Clinton slate was provided by Brian McNichol early in the Big save The goaltender for the Parr Line team gets in the way of a shot from a Winthrop player during action at the annual Blyth Broomball tournament on the weekend. He couldn’t stop enough of the shots, however as Winthrop went on for a 3-0 consolation round championship win. In the other consolation final, 8th Line-Skidz scored a 3-2 overtime win. Adesperationsprawl byaBlyth Sparling’s Propane player fails to prevent this Blue Lite player from stuffing the ball into an empty net in overtime in the women’s division consolation final at the Blyth Broomball Tournament on the weekend. It took overtime for the Blue Lites to defeat Sparlings by a 1-0 count. Blyth Tykes win 10th game of season The Blyth Tykes were in Clinton on Saturday to play an afternoon game. Blyth started the scoring at 12:13 of the first when Matt Anderson got his first of three assisted by Bryce Toll. Bryce then replied with one of his own from Nathan Shannon and Tyler Stewart when he broke in alone and scored through the pads of the Clinton third period as he broke the goose egg with a slick backhand shot to the top corner after a set up from Tim Lyons. With this game behind them the team travelled to Seaforth on Tuesday, January 16 and put their game back in order with a 6-1 win. It only took 15 seconds to break the ice as Jerrod Button sent Mike goaltender. Matt Anderson got his second goal at 5:14 of the second period from Rick VanSteelandt after a lot of digging in front of the Clinton net. David Ansley then added Blyth's next goal from Rick VanSteelandt to give Blyth a 4-0 lead. Clinton got their only go.al at 5:08 of the second when they broke in Bromley in alone at the Seaforth blueline and Mike made no mis­ take. The twosome then combined for the winner early in the second period. Mike Bromley took Jerrod Button’s pass behind the Seaforth goal and surprised the netminder with a wrap-around shot. Brian McNichol upped the lead to 3-0 late in the period as he banked the powerplay snot off the post with alone on the Blyth net. The boys netted three more in the third, Tyler Stewart from David Ansley, Jeremy VanAmersfoort from Nath­ an Shannon and Matt Anderson with his third from Tyler Stewart. This was Blyth’s 10th win of the season along with three losses and a tie. The tykes next game is Sat., Jan. 27 at 4 p.m. in Zurich. assists to Tim Lyons and Tim Cowan. Although Seaforth cut the lead to 3-1 early in the third Blyth re­ sponded with strong play the rest of the way. Jonathan Collins scored a text-book, short-handed effort to put Blyth ahead 4-1. Ryan Cham- ney won the face-off in the Seaforth zone and passed back to the point where Collins’ teed up a nice low drive. Three minutes later Henry Bos scored Blyth’s second power play goal of the game thanks to the playmaking of Mike Bromley and Mike Johnston. Finally, with one minute left in the game, Mike Bromley recorded the hat-trick as he deked around the fallen goalie after pouncing on the rebound of Jerrod Button’s shot. With their game back in order with this win they then hosted Wingham in the fog on Wednes­ day, January 18 and recorded their second in as many days, this time by a 5 - 1 count. Jerrod Button opened the score in the final minute of the first period with a shot along the ice after a pass from Mike Bromley. Tim Cowan and Ryan Chamney set up Brian McNichol’s winner early in the second as Brian flipped the puck into the net as he was being hooked from behind. After Wing­ ham closed the score to 2-1, Jerrod Button fooled the goalie with a nifty move from close in on a set up from Tim Lyons. A pretty three-way passing play in the final minute of period two gave Blyth a 4-1 lead. Ryan Chamney cashed in on the hard work of linemates Marc Bricker and Brian McNichol with a tip in at the crease. Jerrod Button completed the scoring in the third period as he recorded the hat-trick with assists to Mike Bromley and Tim Lyons. The teams finished in a 1-1 fust period draw as Tim Lyons tied the game with 34 seconds left as he redirected Christopher Howson’s shot. Ryan Chamney also earned an assist on the goal. Ryan Cham­ ney gave Blyth a brief 2-1 lead midway through the second frame as he jumped on a loose puck in a scramble at the crease. Christopher Howson and Tim Lyons’ forecheck­ ing resulted in important assists on the goal. The Brussels’ offence then took over as they scored three late unanswered goals^to stake them to a 4-2 lead to start the third period. However, Blyth came out fired up to deadlock the contest at 4-4 before the third period was half over. / Ryan Chamney brought Blyth to within one goal as he finished off a two on one break with Brian McNichol. Mike Bromley scored a power-play goal to tie the game as he tipped in Jerrod Button’s shot with Benjie Hakkers also in on the scoring play. Next it was Brussels’ turn to take the lead as they scored two goals to once again put them in the driver’s seat. Blyth closed the gap to 6-5 with just over two minutes left in the game as Tim Lyons notched his second goal of the game as he steered Mike Bromley’s pass from the corner past the Brussels’ goalkeeper. Although Blyth pulled their goa­ lie in the final minute they couldn’t mount an attack as Brussels hung on for a 6-5 win, to hand Blyth their second loss of the season in regular schedule play.
