Blyth couple given partial solution Safety, not commerce has gotten a Blyth merchant couple at least part of what they wanted in snow removal. Blyth Village Council voted Wed nesday night to continue with the practice it initiated earlier regard ing snow removal in front of The Pottery at Westmoreland and Queens Streets. Town crews have been instructed to remove snow from the corner of the two streets to prevent obstructions to motorists. That will remove snow directly in front of The Pottery which Lewis and Valerie Pitman had asked for when they appeared before council in December on what they called the “annual pilgrimage”. The Pitmans had asked for removal of the snow in front of their business as a minimum but had said they felt snow really should be removed all along the block from Drummon to Westmoreland Streets since this area was designated as “core commercial” and the rest of the core commercial area had snow removed and sidewalks kept clear by town crews. Councillor Ken Brown said he felt the new policy of the village of having snow taken away from the corner for safety purposes had improved things and he felt the crew was doing a good job. Councillor Steve Sparling said he thought “the village is extremely, extremely good at moving snow” by comparison to other communi ties. From the safety aspect, he said, he thought the current mea sures were adequate. He said he could understand that as a business the Pitman’s would want the entire block cleared but the village had to look at the cost. “My bottom line is that as long as the corner is kept clear for traffic, that’s as well as the village can do financially”. Councillor Brown wondered how much extra it would cost to keep the sidewalk opened since the town crew was in the area anyway and with the other work being done, the area not cleaned is now quite small. Reeve Albert Wasson said the cost might not be too large if the town crew could just blow the snow onto adjoining properties, but if it had to be blown on to the street and then picked up, costs could climb quick ly. Many property owners don’t want snow blown onto their proper ty, he said. Councillor Brown agreed with other councillors that the current policy was adequate. Councillor Sparling said he just hoped that the Pitmans understood council’s position. “I hope they really don’t feel they aren’t wel come in Blyth and that we’re being mean-spirited to them”, he said. Annual meetings will be held following a pot luck luncheon after church on Sunday, Jan. 24 at Bluevale and Sunday, Jan. 28 at Walton. It is thought the spirit is dead in this community for sports. If the parents don’t taken an interest and want to participate it may be hard to carry on, to keep our park going this coming season. E.
