Starring Frances Hyland, William Hutt and Susan Coyne, “The Road to Mecca” opens January 12. The production is directed by Diana LeBlanc, with sets by Elis Y. Lam and costumes by Yvonne Sauriol. Louise Guinand designs the lighting and is assisted by James A. Milburn. “The Road to Mecca” recounts a journey of the soul by an elderly South African artist. Miss Helen, portrayed by Frances Hyland, lives alone outside a tiny village, ostra cized by a suspicious community. She has retreated from her church and community to focus on the marvellous sculptures she creates in her backyard, a source of wonder and joy, her mecca. Her existence New ‘pygmalion’ story at Grand Martha Henry, artistic director of The Grand Theatre, has announ ced that the third production in this year’s “Undergrand” season will be “Cecil and Cleopaytra” by Daniel Libman. Ms. Henry will direct this Canadian comedy, which runs March 8 to 17, 1990, in The McManus Studio Theatre. Cecil and Cleopaytra is a pygma lion story with a twist. Cecil, a crusty, domineering Hollywood acting teacher, is now confined to"a wheelchair. Exasperated with his invalid state, he strikes a deal with his nurse Rosita: he will teach her to act, she can live rent free. Rosita is skeptical, Cecil is adamant! In pursuit of this formidable chal lenge, Cecil and Rosita slowly develop a tentative friendship as they explore the glories of Shake is threatened when fear prompts Pastor Marius Byleveld (William Hutt) to persuade Miss Helen to abandon her home and her art to live in an old age home. His genuine concern for the frail Miss Helen’s well-being and gently-rea soned insistence that the move is necessary hide an implacable re solve: her art poses a threat to his congregation that must be denied. With battle lines drawn, Miss Helen is joined by Elsa (Susan Coyne), a young friend who alter nately goads Miss Helen to fight for her belief and abdicates any re sponsibility for her. Confused and challenged, Miss Helen eventually finds the strength to speak for herself. Athol Fugard is a South African playwright, actor, director, and filmmaker. A vehement advocate of non-violent end to apartheid, Fu speare and the comic twists of human relationships. Commented Ms. Henry: “We are delighted to have found a script for the Undergrand worthy of the formidable talents of Sandi Ross.
