Bulls edge Barons, slip into Jr.‘C’ league lead Close call The Brussels Bulls opened the new decade on a winning note edging the visiting Hanover Barons 3-2 in front of a full house Sunday afternoon. The victory gives the Juniors a 17-6-2 win-loss record, good enough for a one point lead atop the Western Jr. C league standings. After a scoreless first period in which Hanover outshot Brussels 18-7 the Bulls opened the scoring on the powerplay 59 seconds into the second frame as Corey McKee set up J. C. Hewitt. Four minutes later the Bulls powerplay again clicked as Hewitt and Joe Walker assisted on a Marty Rutledge goal. Hanover notched a powerplay goal on their own late in the period and the Bulls took a 2-1 lead to the dressing room after 40 minutes. With less than nine minutes remaining in the game Rutledge’s second goal of the game on passes from Hewitt and McKee gave the Bulls a 3-1 lead. Tension mounted as Hanover swarmed the Brussels net and scored with 11 seconds remaining but the Bulls ran out the lock and skated off the ice without incident with the 3-2 win. Jeff Roy, whose goaltending kept the Bulls alive throughout the game stopped 33 shots for the win. Saturday night in Hanover the Western Jr. C All-Stars were defeated by the Stratford Jr. B Cullitons6-4. Murray Foxton, J. C. Hewitt, Jeff Roy, Marty Rutledge and Ron Strome all gave solid performances in representing the Brussels Bulls. In a pregame meeting with the OHA in which the Bulls asked the league officials to review the suspensions handed to Ron Strome, Bevin Flett and Scott Bremner in Hanover’s game-end ing show of intimidation last Sun day, the OHA ruled the incident was not premeditated and all suspensions would stand. No action was taken against the Hanover Coach nor the Hanover Trainer who challenged the Bulls bench at games end. The Bulls were to travel to Goderich Tuesday (last night) then bus to Mt. Forest Saturday night. The Walkerton Black Hawks arrive in town Sunday for a 2:00 start.
