Crusaders avenge loss by drubbing Drayton 15-1 On December 29 the Brussels Crusaders travelled to Wellesley to play the Merchants for the last time in their schedule. The Crusaders opened the scor­ ing five and a half minutes into the game when Troy Pocaluyko conver­ ted a pass from Brian Ten Pas. Wellesley, however, came back with the next three goals to take a 3-1 lead after one period play. The Crusaders cut the lead by one when Trim Fritz scored on a set up from Brian Campbell and Kevin McArter. Mark Harding then gave Fritz a pass and he tied the score at 3-3 with a minute and a half left in the second period. Wellesley jumped back into a two-goal lead in the third before Mark Harding tipped in a shot from the point by Trev Pocaluyko with Fritz drawing the other assist on the play. However the Merchants increased the lead to two again two minutes later. Fritz and McArter then set up Campbell to cut the lead to one goal and make the final score 6-5 for Wellesley. On Saturday, Dec. 30, the Crusa­ ders were on the road again this time they travelled to Drayton to face them in a re-match of the tournament consolation champion­ ship game. The scoring started five minutes into the game when Tim Fritz and Kevin McArter set up Brian Camp­ bell for his first of the game. Drayton tied the score six minutes later. Dave Stephenson then put the Crusaders back out in front with Ken Cousins drawing the assist. Campbell scored his second of the game a minute later with the asissts going to McArter and Fritz. The first period ended with Brus­ sels holding a 3-1 lead. Drayton opened the scoring in the second when they cut the lead by one goal but that was as close as Blyth PeeWees lose championship to Brussels BY RUSTY BLADES The Blyth Pee Wees participated in the Legion Pee Wee Tournament held in Lucknow on December 16. They lost in the final to Brussels after earlier defeating Ripley and Hensail. In their first game against Ripley the teams traded goals throughout the contest before Blyth secured the win with two late goals. Mike Bromley did his impression of the One Man Gang as he impressed all those in attendance with six goals, including the power play winner and assisted on Jerrod Button’s goal. In addition to his goal, Jerrod assisted on three of Bromley’s blasts. Benjie Hakkers assisted on two goals while Tim Lyons came through late in the game. After assisting on Bromley’s winner, Tim Lyons added an insurance marker with 1:31 left in the game. He stripped a Ripley defenceman of the puck behind the net after a big hit and scored on a wrap around off the goaltender. This win carried Blyth into the next round where they met some familiar faces from Hensail. Blyth scored 21 seconds into the game as they built a 5-0 first period lead and then cruised to an 8-0 whitewash. The offence was shared amongst the three lines although Mike Bromley still managed to record the hat-trick to go with two assists. Jerrod Button had a goal and two assists while Ryan Chamney re­ corded two goals. Mike Johnston found the net once as did Henry Bos, who also had an assist. Christopher Howson chipped in with two assists while single assists were notched by Shawn Hakkers, Brian McNichol, Tim Lyons, Jona­ than Collins and Tim Cowan. The goaltending duo finally re­ corded that elusive shut-out as Chris Lee and Michael de Jong Brussels brings home crown Hensail travelled to Brussels to provide the opposition Friday night, Dec. 15 and Brussels went home with a 7-0 score. Andy Overholt recorded his fourth shut-out of the season with the help of a strong defensive unit. Brad Mulvey opened the scoring with assists going to Dave Lewing- ton and Chris Stevenson. In the second period Brussels got goals from Matt Lee, Lewington, Wayne Alexander and Tevor Mach- an. Picking up assists in the second were Alexander, Doug Wilson, Tim Machan, Mulvey, Pete Gusso and Randy Beuermann. Third period goals were by Mulvey and Matt Lee with assist to Alexander. On Saturday the boys journeyed to Lucknow for the annual Legion Pee Wee tournament. Their first game was against the home town Lucknow boys. When the final buzzer went Brussels had a 6-1 win. Pete Gusso had the only goal of the first period. At the end of two periods Brussels was up 2-0 on a goal by Matt lee and assist from Wayne Alexander. In the third period the Brussels Brussels Curling Club holds Christmas jitneg• • on 40 end The Brussels Curling Club held its annual Christmas Jitney December 27. There were curlers participating. After curling three, six games, prizes were given to all teams taking part. First with 46 points was Brad Speiran, Donna Bauer, Rob Veitch and Bob Steiss; second, 45.5 points, Brian War­ wick, Tom Warwick, Yvonne Knight, Barb Alexander, and Ann Uhler; third, 36.75 points, Stu Steiss, Ruth Bauer, Brian Alexan­ der and Sue Gowing; fourth, 33.75 points George Zwep, Velma Lock­ ing, Steve Steiss and Cindy Stute; fifth, 33 points, Orval Bauer, Frank Bremner, John Lowe and Jason Koetsier; sixth, Mike Alexander, Madelene Steiss, Brent Evans and Frank Breckenridge; seventh, Mervyn Bauer, Marie Stute, Ger­ ald Knight, and Rich Veitch; eighth, Wayne Lowe, Joyce Alex­ ander, Roger Evans and Rodney Bauer; ninth, Bob Alexander, Jane Zwep, Brett Bauer and Wayne Alexander. Consolation went to the team of Ken McDonald, Ma-g Taylor, Lyle Martin and Darren 1 ,auer. lads scored four more and Lucknow replied with one. Tim Machan, Ryan Finch, Trevor Machan and Brett Clarkson scored the goals, Randy Beuermann with three as­ sists, Lee, Clarkson, Finch and Tim Machan getting one each. Brussels was matched against Blyth in the final. Wayne Alexan­ der with assist from Trevor Machan put Brussels up one, but Blyth came roaring back with two goals to give them a 2-1 lead. The only scoring of the second was a goal by Dave Lewington from Brad Mul­ vey. The third period, Brussels scored four unanswered goals by Doug Wilson, Lewington, Pete Gusso and Mulvey with assists to Matt lee, Ryan Finch and Tim Machan. This gave the Brussels boys the “B” Championship and will repre­ sent the Legion Zone on January 6 at Goderich. Full marks must go to the Blyth boys as they only had one game to rest and were without one of their top scorers who got hurt in their previous game. The Brussels players, coaching staff and parents thank the Brus­ sels Legion for the opportunity to play in the tournament. enjoyed a full game of rubber repelling. This victory sent Blyth into the championship game against Brus­ sels, who received a bye into the final. Although Blyth enjoyed a 2-1 first period lead, a more well rested Brussels team turned on the jets in the third to take home the cham­ pionship trophy with a 6-2 win. After Brussels opened the scor­ ing Tim Cowan, who was filling in for the injured Brian McNichol on left wing, evened the score for Blyth. Ryan Chamney and Christo­ pher Howson assisted on the goal as Tim Cowan took the pass at the blueline and drilled a long shot that handcuffed the Brussels’ goal­ keeper. Blyth’s second goal was recorded the same way as Mike Bromley’s rink rush was capped off by Benjie Hakker’s quick snapshot. Full marks goes to Brussels as they outplayed Blyth the rest of the way to secure a 6-2 championship win. they got. Campbell scored his third of the night with McArter and Fritz Fritz once again drawing the assists. Troy Pocaluyko scored his first of the game on an unassisted effort with five minutes left in the period. With nine seconds left in the period Dave Montgomery and Brian Ten Pas set up Troy for his second of the game and gave the Crusaders a 6-2 lead after two periods. The third period started with Ten Pas and Pocaluyko setting up Montgomery for the goal. One minute later Pocaluyko scored his third of the game with Montgomery and Ten Pas drawing assists. Tim Fritz then set up Campbell for his fourth goal of the night. Twenty- five seconds later Campbell set up Fritz for his first goal of the game. Kevin Deitner then scored his first goal of the night with the assists going to Fritz and Campbell. Fourteen seconds later Pocaluy­ ko scored his fourth of the game with Montgomery and Ten Pas drawing the assists. Dave Stephen­ son got his second of the game a minute later with Ken Cousins and Mark Harding getting the assists on the play. Troy Pocaluyko finish­ ed the scoring off by getting his fifth and sixth goals of the game with Ten Pas and Montgomery drawing assists on both of the last two goals. The final score of the game was 15-2 for a decisive victory for the Crusaders. This weekend the Crusaders play in the Milverton tournament with their first game being Saturday morning at 11:30 against the Wild Things from Ingersoll.
