Bulls battle Barons for win On Friday, December 29, the Brussels Bulls lost for the third time against the Goderich Sailors, dropping a 9-7 decision with an extremely lacklustre performance on the lake front. Thanks largely to the goaltend ing of Jeff Roy the Bulls trailed by only a 2-1 score after 20 minutes as Goderich completely dominated the opening period. Brussels came to life in the second scoring five times, includ ing a 6-5 go-ahead marker with one second showing on the clock. Unfortunately Goderich out- hustled, outskated and outscored the Bulls by a 4-1 margin in the final period for a 9-7 Sailor victory. Goalscorers for Brussels were Marty Rutledge with three, Bob McMillan with two, Steve Fritz and Jeff Douglas with one. Jeff Roy took the loss in a game that featured only 32 minutes in penal ties divided evenly between the two clubs. On Sunday, Dec. 31 the Bulls rebounded to play one of their best games as they knocked off the Hanover Barons 5-2 in a high-spir ited New Year’s Eve match that ended in a free-for-all. Brussels jumped into a 3-0 first period lead on goals by Joe Walker, Bob McMillan and J. C. Hewitt. The Barons opened the second period scoring two quick goals before the Bulls regrouped and Ron Strome gave Brussels a 4-2 lead after 40 minutes. The third period remained score less until with under four minutes remaining Steve Fritz scored the insurance marker for a 5-2 Bulls victory. At 19:55 of the third period Shawn Jacklin was involved in a fight along the boards and in true ‘Baron” hockey four more Han over skaters simultaneously dropp ed their gloves at the next face-off. The Barons have used this intimi dation tactic for years and because they are one of the OHA elite teams probably no disciplinary action will be taken. Brussels recently added two newcomers to their roster in Chris Johnson, a Clinton native with Jr. C. experience in Goderich and Jeff Douglas, who comes to the Bulls from the Listowel Jr. B. Cyclones in exchange for Andrew Henderson. The Bulls next home game is Sunday, January 7 at 2:00 against, ironically the Hanover Barons. The Brussels Bulls fight for first place in Western Jr. C action continued as the Bulls won two of three games played the week before Christmas. On Saturday, Dec. 16, Brussels travelled to Dundalk and downed a stubborn Grand Valley club 6-2. A small ice surface and aggressive Harvester forechecking kept the game scoreless until the second period when the Bulls clicked four times, three by Marty Rutledge and a single to Jason Kraemer. In the third period Rutledge scored his fourth of the game while Bevin Flett added the final tally. Flett, shifted to a forward position for the game also added three assists. The Bulls outshot Grand Valley 37-32 with Murray Foxton claiming his ninth win of the year. On Wednesday, Dec. 20 the Bulls sent the visiting Goderich Sailors home with an 11-0 defeat. Blyth Novices split games The Blyth Novice A hockey team took to the ice Thursday, Dec. 21 and played a strong hockey game, but lost a close one, 4 - 2 to Listowel. Listowel opened the scoring four minutes into the game, as the fast paced play went end to end. Blvth tied the game on a power play goal, as Darryl Bromley found the corn er, with Jeff Cowan and Michael Haggitt setting up the play, at the three minute mark of the second period. Both teams took’ a much deserved 10 minute break and Goal scorers for Brussels were Rutledge with four, Bob McMillan with two, Ron Strome, Jason Kramer, Jamie Lubbings, Shawn Jacklin and Bevin Flett, all with one each. Brussels led 2-0 after 20 minutes and 8-0 after 40 minutes. The Bulls added three more in the third while Goderich oroke former Sailor goal tender Jeff Roy’s shutout bid with two goals in the game’s final 10 minutes of play. On Friday, Dec. 22 the Bulls played Santa Claus as they literally gave the hometown Mount Forest Patriots a 10-5 win. The Bulls are winless in Mount Forest and have been outscored 20-5 in two games played. Mount Forest opened quickly scoring five first period goals to chase starting goaltender Murray Foxton to the bench in favour of Jeff Roy. The Bulls fought back, closing the gap to 7-4 after two periods and notched a powerplay goal 28 seconds into the third before Mount Forest ended the comeback scoring three times in a two minute, forty second span for a convincing 10-5 victory. Steve Vandendool with two, Joe Walker, J.C. Hewitt and Ron Strome scored for the Bulls while league leading scorer Marty Rut ledge was held to one assist. MONDAYS & THURSDAYS 7:00-8:00 P.M.
