Dental Deliberations
I still remember my first visit to
the dentist's, At the tender age of
five years, upon my complaining of
a "hurt in my toof," I was marched
straightway by a worried mother to
the torture-chamber of this ogre.
Upon arriving, we found the waiting
room jammed. I was forced to sit
on mother's knee, a thing for which
in my own estimation,
was

comfortably on his equally prominent
chin, and a melancholy-faced old
lady, dressed in very sombre black
clothes, She sighed very often which
made me wonder if she had a candy
stuck in her windpipe, and lacked
energy to cough. This pessimistic
person, began ,in a very doleful tone,
to tell of the old days, when absolute-
ly nothing could be cone for a tooth-
ache, and how modern dentists only
increased the pain when they started
monkeying around. Her lalse teeth
didn't fit her and couldn't he made
to. They were always slipping. This
dentist was so awfully rough with
you; didn't care if he half took your
head off. This was obviously making
an impression on me to the increased
agony of my mother, Just as I be-
gan to peruse the old lady's inset to
see where they had sewed her head
back on again, and to wonder why
they had bothered, she sneezed ‘101-
ently, and those awful false tet'ih

flew out on the floor and broke. Be-
fore she was quite through weeping
and wailing, the dentist summoned
me out of turn, purely irons metes
on my poor mother, who was showing 1
signs of a nervous breakdown.
Once I was in the chair, shut up
alone with this dreadful man, lie ask- ;
ed pleasantly how I was that day,
which I took to be a subtle device
to get me to open my mouth, When''
I refused to answer he politely asked
me to perform this simple function. I
and when I also refused to do this,
he began prying at my lips with
cold white fingers that stank of
soap, I opened my mouth when he
didn't expect it, and seized one of
those fingers with the very things.
he was trying to get at. He gave a •
surprised shout and gave me a box
on the ear, which caused me to re-
lease my bulldog grip. The dentist
informed me that I was a little some-
thing that mother used to wash my
mouth out for saying, and that the
next time I did that he'd knock all
my teeth out. This pleasant intelli-
gence scared me into opening my
mouth ,and he began picking and
poking around with one of his sharp.
nasty little tools. I didn't like this,
and kicked him in the stomach. The
tool slipped and jabbed my tongue,
which produced a loud roar, When
the t his wind back, he
said some more somethings and also
that if I gave any more trouble he'd
get my mother in there, This was
just what I wanted, so as soon as his
face was close enough to mine again
I bit him on the end of the nose.
Realizing his mistake, the poor den-
tist said that if I didn't straighten
up he would give me gas; that would
quiet me if anything could. He then
turned his back on me for a mom-
ent, which wasn't wise for I took
the sharp thing he had been torturing
me with and applied it to his poster-
ior. That was the last straw, He
solicited the assistance of my mother,
who held me while he, with a certain
fiendish delight lost on neither of
us, gave me gas.
The next thing I knew, my mother
