Miss Lois Mason has been working in the Bell Telephone during the past two weeks. Mrs, Michael Cummings returned home on Saturday after spending the past four months with relatives in the West. Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert Beecroft and children, visited on Sunday at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Watson of Brucefield. Mr. and Mrs, Lloyd Mason of Lis- towel, and Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Clarke of Hensel', and Mr. and Mrs. Eldon Jarrott and children of Kippen, visited on Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Mason. Miss Helen Johnston of Goderich, spent a few days last week at the home of her sister, Mrs. Robert C. Scott, of E. Wawanosh. Miss Eleanore Wightman attended the Young Peoples Convention at Ex- eter over the week-end. Mr. and Mrs. Gordon McBurney and sons, spent the week-end with relatives at London and St. Thomas. Mrs. Frank Thompson accompanied them and visited with her sister, Mrs. Milton McBurney. Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Zinn and family spent the week-end at the home of their brother, Mr. Kenneth "Linn. Rev. and Mrs. G. 0. Cox and Ruth Ann, visited with Mrs. Mao Ross and Miss Olive Terriff on Monday. Rev, Cox conducted the Anniversary ser- vices at Palmerston United Church on Sunday. Mr. Robert Laidlaw and his sons have been putting gray asphalt siding on their house during the past week, considerably improving its appear- ance. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Coultes and family spent Sunday with her father, Mr. Thos. Kerry and other Paisley relatives. FORDW1CH A lifelong and highly respected Howick township resident, Christen': Johnston, wife of Mr. Harvey Spar- ling, passed away in Victoria Hospital, London, on Sunday, Oct. 14th in her 67th year, She was the daughter or the late Samuel Johnston and Jane Wallace, being the youngest of a gamily of ten, and was born at lot 30, con. 9, Howick, where she lived until moving to Fordwieh in 1901. There she took an active part in the Ford- wich Methodist Church, being organ- ist and choir leader for a number of years. In 1909 she was united in marriage to Mr. Harvey Sparling after which they resided on con. 5, Howick until moving to Gorrie in 1948, where she was a valued member of the Gorrie United Church, She leaves, besides her husband to mourn her loss, once daughter Jean, Principal of the Gorrie Public School, and one son Clarence con. 2 Howick; two grandchildren Yvonne and Sparling; three sisters and four bro- thers, Mrs. (Margaret Jane) Jack- man, Texas, Mrs. (Agnes) Winter, Col- lingwood, Mrs. (Sarah Ann) Brown, Mora, Minnesota, Rev. Wallace Johns- ton, Collingwood, George and Albert, of Fordwich and James of Arthur. Joseph and Thomas predeceased her. A public service was held on Tues., Oct 16 in the Gorric United Chruch, conducted by Rev, J. R. Watt. During the service Mr. Dick Carson sang one of her favourite hymns "God will take care of you". Pallbearers were six nephews, Johh Winter, Sam Johnston, Harvey Johns- ton, Ewart Whitfield, Everett Sparling and Sparling Johnston, The beautiful floral tributes bore silent tribute of the esteem in which the deceased was held, also the very large attendance at the funeral. Flower bearers were: L. R. Ruttan, E. J. Parrish, Cecil Day, Harry Hastie, John Gathers, Irving Toner, Thos. Earl and Thos, Douglas. Interment was in Gorric cemetery. Relatives were present from Hunts- ville, Collingwood, Elmvale, Nfinesing, Alliston, Sarnia, St, Marys, Arthur, Palmerston, Mildmay, Wingham, Monkton, Brussels, Ethel and Lis- towel. Jas, Aldrich, a native of Howick, passed away in a Victoria Hospital on Oct. 7th in his 79th year. He was a carpenter by trade and his early life was spent on con. 2, Helmick, After his marriage to Margaret Daly of Palmerston they went to Sask. where he farmed, After the death of his wife 6 years ago, he moved to Calgary, moving to Victoria, two years ago. He leaves two sons and a daughter. Cee. Scott of the 12th Con- cession had passed away in Victoria Hospital, on Wednesday after an ill- ness of a few days suffering from polio. He was in his fourth year. Be- sides his sorrowing parents, he leaves to mourn him, one brother, Barry Charles. The private funeral was held from the Currie Funeral Home, Wingham, on Thursday afternoon, with Rev. W. The Y.P.S. of Langside church met recently at the home of Mr, and Mrs. Parrish Moffatt of Kinloss, and dur- ing the evening, Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Simpson, and Mr. and Mrs, Jas, Rich- ardson, newlyweds in that district, were each presented with nice electric table lamps. Last week the ladies of Langside church held a very success- ful Bazaar, selling baking, sewing, candy and vegetables. Rev. R. D. A. Currie was in charge of the program that followed. During the evening, Mrs. John Richardson and Miss Grace Richardson were each presented with a cup and saucer as a remembrance from their Langside friends. Mrs. Orville Mitchell held a Demon- stration of Stanley Products at her home last Tuesday evening. Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Scott of Rip- ley, spent Sunday at the home of her niece, Mrs. Russell Ross. Mrs. Robert Henderson had the misfortune to fall and break her ankle last Monday at her home in Kinloss, She was taken to Wingham Hospital for a few days. Mr. Ivan Laidlaw was the lucky winner of the draw for a turkey at the Rummage sale in Wingham on Saturday last. Mr. and Mrs. Jas. Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Ireland re- turned home on Saturday after spend- ing almost seven weeks on a trip that took them over 8500 miles of road. They went by the States to Yellow- stone Park and to Banff, and through the Rockies to Vancouver, and to Victoria and to Port Angeles, down to San Francisco, Los Angeles, and to Laguna Beach, where they visited with his brother, Mr. and Mrs. Russell Ireland, and where they also visited with Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Field, for- mer residents of Wingliam. They re- turned by Texas via the Hoover Dam and St. Louis ,and visited with many relatives and friends at different plac- es along their route. Mr. and Mrs. Albert Westbrook of Komoka, Mr. and Mrs. Len West- hreok of Goderich visited on Thurs- day at the home of their aunt, Mrs. Jas. Cornelius. On Sunday, Mrs. Cor- nelius' ninety-four-year-old sister, Mrs. Gray, and Mr. and Mrs. Clifford Webb of Goderich, visited there. Mr. Hector Purdon, Lucknow, and his sister, Mrs. Cecil Falconer, made a business trip to Woodstock on Mon- day. East Wawanosh Federation of Ag- riculture are holding their annual meeting and Turkey supper in the Memorial Hall here this Thursday evening, with Mr, John Broderick of St. Catharines, president of Ontario Federation, as guest speaker. The Ladies Aid of the Presbyterian Church held a quilting at the home of Mrs. John Gaunt on Wednesday last. Mr. and Mrs. George McQuaig and Mr. and Mrs. Jas. McInnis attended the Presbyterian church in Lucknow on Sunday, when Ronald George, son of Mr. and Mrs. George Stanley was baptized. The W.M.S. of the United Church was held last Wednesday, and the ladies gathered to quilt in the S. S. room of the church. A short business meeting was held, with Mrs. Gilles- pie giving the Call to Worship and Mrs. E. H. Groskorth leading in prayer and the meeting was closed with Mrs. Ernest Casemore leading in prayer for the success of the mis- sionary efforts of the church and its taken. The Fall Thankoffering was Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Moore and Mr. and Mrs. Milian Moore and children, visited on Sunday at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Sparling of Wing- ham.
