Big guns for Wingham at bat were Bob Groves, Freddy Templeman, Johnny Crewson and Sharpy Sell. Big Bob Groves banged-out a triple in the eighth which broke a two-all dead- lock to that frame, Groves and Templeman both had three hits. The locals stole a page from Luck- now's book and scored two runs in the first, Bob Groves brought in the two runs with a nice hit, at the right time. The lucky Lucknows came back to tie it up in the bottom of the first. Hall and Miley solving on Chin's single. That was all for Lucknow Thursday night. In the seventh Miley, as usual, stole third base and Chin got to third in the eighth but that's the closest they got again. Biggest innings for Wingham was the eighth, when with only one out, and Crewson on first, Groves' triple brought in Johnny Crewson and Alt- cheson scored on eWstlake's double. Westlake was the eighth and final run brought in, in the eighth. Templeman and Seli both got hits in the ninth and were brought in for the final two runs. Doug Aitcheson came through with a beautiful double play in the third innings, catching Greer out at second and throwing Miley out at first, Guy Sparrow pitched a good game with 15 strike-outs. The Mers were a hustling, fighting ball team and showed the spirit that can win them the championship.. THE VOICE OF TEMPERANCE The Huron Temperance Federation is holding a convention on Wednes- day, October 24th, in North St. United Church, Goderich, afternoon and ev- ening sessions. Mr. G. A. Shewfelt, President of the Ontario Temperance Federation will be the guest speaker. With so much mis-representation of Huron County's Canada Temperance Act on the part of its enemies it is important that those who do not want liquor outlets opened in Huron, get together to take counsel and strengthen their position. Against Points 10 '3 5 3 15 2 39 0 POTENTIAL HURLERS— Nobody can tell us that there isn't potential baseball or softball material in this community, after working in the Lions Club baseball throw booth. For a while it looked like we might run out of cigars and chocolate bars, Take it easy on those cigars, fellows, they might ruin your condition. LUCKNOW LAMENTS— We would like to quote a few paragraphs from the "Lutknow Bodyguard's" Oct, 11th edition: " 'Cock' Sp&rrow capped his individual standing by rushing at Hall in pugilistic fashion, but he realized that discretion was the better part of 'valour', And this little tid-bit: "A donnybrook broke out in the first inning. With Hall at third the ball got away from Gardner, Hughie went to break and Gardner grabbed him by the jacket, ripping it badly, When Hughie saw it he took a plunge at Gardner. The firewoorks was nipped in the bud and the two teams settled down to playing ball," It seems that our neighbours to the west got carried away by their imagination and had decided to write fiction instead of facts, That last little bit about poor innocent 'little' Hughie Hall being assaulted by that big bully, Lorne Gardner, really takes the cake. Maybe Hughie is getting fragile in his old age. Try again, fellows. Anything for a few laughs. grand- halted hurriedly when STANDINGS IN THE HIGH SCHOOL GRID LOOP— Wins Tied Lost For Goderich 1 1 0 15 Seaforth iiiiiiiiiiii iiiiii 1 1 0 16 Wingham 1 0 1 33 0 0 2 5 WHAT HAPPENED?— Here we go and put ourselves out on a limb to call the local gridmen to win over Goderich and they let us down. Didn't get to see the game, but our spies report a good battle was waged by both sides with Wingham not per- forming at their peak. Make sure you win the next one fellows. I'd like to win back the yo-yo which I lost on the last one. If Bob Ferguson can win a free dinner we can do likewise, Our super-sleuths also have whispered the info that Murray Gerrie, cap- tain; Bill Rann and John Crawford on the line and Neil Stainton at flying wing were giving that extra try that could have meant a win. Well, for our records you didn't really lose the game fellows, and a win this p.m. will prove that we are right. How about it? BIG ONE— Tonight the final and deciding game between Wingham and Lucknow will be played—and to the victor goes the spoils—and a chance at Walker- ton and the WOAA Intermediate A Softball crown, AT WOSSA MEET — The Western Ontario Secondary Schools Association track and field meet was held at London, Saturday, Oct. 13. The following students from Wing- ham District High School were sent to the meet by the Athletic Society: KEITH .ANDERSON, GEORGE WAYNE, VERNA SHOWERS, MARGARET SANDERSON, ISOBEL DENNIS, LOIS THOMPSON and DOREEN MACH- AN. Although our athletes did not bring any honours home to Wingham, they gained some valuable experience which will be useful next year. HOCKEY PUZZLE— The NHL is in full swing and the dailies are full of hockey news, but what are Wingham's plans for the hockey season? Nobody seems to know the answer. Let's not leave it too late! LOSING OUR GRIP— Played around the Walkerton course for the first time and what a beau- tiful layout it is, especially at this time of year. Played wasn't exactly the right word. Hooked, sliced and dubbed would be more correct. Wingham ;golfers spotted on the course were Mr. and Mrs. Al: Williams and Jack LUCKNOW LEGIONNAIRES TIE UP SERIES TWO-ALL It must have been the Lucknow Legionnaires' birthday 'on Monday night, because Wingham Crossett Mercurys gave them a present. One ball game wrapped-up in a score of 8-0. The series is now tied at two games each with the big one in Luck- now to-night. Too many errors by the hometown- ers and too many home runs by Shelley Miley kept the Mercs tied-up all evening. Wingham even had the bases loaded in the seventh frame with only one away and the next two players struck out. Lucknow opened a first innings surprise package and scored three runs, Greer gained first on an error, Miley was walked, and a hit by Mac- Donald brought them both in. Chin followed at bat and brought in Mac- Donald. From there on the grief piled up. Miley was trerrlfic at bat and a two base hit in the third was muffed by the fielder and Shelley was home like a streak, He followed- up with a home run in the fifth and another in the seventh. Three runs crossed the plate in the seventh frame for Lucknow, when Greer was walked, Shelley hit his second home run to score Greer, and MacDonald came home on a succession of errors at first and home.
