It's a pleasure to drive your car, when
it's running perfectly. Cars are like
people- they need attention to "do
their stuff" as they should. Nothing
makes a car behave better than regular
attention at a "SUPERTEST" Station.
"SUPERTEST" dealers are always glad
to see you drive in for free and
friendly service.
"SUPERTEST" dealers are independent
business men working in and for
their own communities-it's 4
pleasure to do business with them.

the value of the home freezer.

Hello Homemakers! Did you at-
tend the Canadian National Exhibi-
tion? If so, how nmeti did you see in
one day? We joined the crowd who
heard Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt and
must have been inspired by the sta-
mina of that great humanitarian who
is known the world over for "My
Day". Here are glimpses of a few of
the manufacturers' themes which
may be of interest to the busy home-
maker.

3. A series of nursery rhymes made
a meat and shortening demonstration
memorable in regard to the various
ways to prepare meat.
4. When we listened to a pleasant
voice while holding a revolver to our
car we learned of the tremendous
job of providing today's telephone
strvice, yet a new telelucane is bent&
installed in Canada every 73 seconds
during every working hour.
5. When we heard th; gigantic
rumble of Niagara Falls and saw the
mist rising we could visual..ze more
electricity in the future as the com-
mentator explained construction of a
new hydro power station.
6. New designs in dishes by Cana-
dian potters aro traditional yet con-
ventional. The colors and artwork
will look well in both the formal and
informal setting.
7. In the Australian exhibit we saw
glass jars of canned whole pineapple
and also canned raw bananas,
being slashed away by over 2,000
men and a million dollars worth
of machinery to clear a road and
site for the giant new smelter and
a city which will eventually house
50,000 people, To power largest
aluminum shelter in the world the
commonwealth's biggest earthen
seemed to be a wide selection of
knives we noticed women buying
knives with the shank stuck in a
wooden handle in preference to the
more durable type of handle which is
always rivetted on.
16. Points on using navy whit
beans were being advertised as an ec-
onomical supper dish. We shall list
the hints here: Pick over white beans
and wash thoroughly. Soak in cold
water to cover (use 3 cups water to 1
cup beans) overnight. If possible, use
soft water. Drain off the soft water
and cook beans in fresh salted wa-
ter at simmering point. For good
flavour, season beans well.
Baked Beans
2 cups white (navy) beans
14 lb. pork fat
3 tbsps. brown sugar
3 tbsps. molasses
tsps. salt
1/:2 tsp, dry mustard
'/i cup minced onion
2 tbsps, catsup
2 1/.: cups water
With pressure saucepan: Soak beans
in water to cover, overnight. Drain
and place in bottom of pressure sauce-
pan with other ingredients. Cook at
15 lbs. pressure for 50 minutes. Makes
about 6 cups.
Braised Short Ribs
(An economical meat, cooked delic-
iously tender).
Brown pieces of short ribs in a skil-
let with a little fat; (Do not cover to
broWn). Then add tomato juice to al-
most cover the meat and cover the
pan. Cook in a preheated electric
oven of 325 degrees for two hours.
Time of cooking will vary, depending
upon the thickness of the meat.
WEED OF THE WEEK-
Cinquefoils
Cinquefoils, usually called "Voverty
Weeds" get this name from their
habit of growing on "poverty" soils-
that is, soils which are low in fertil-
ity. According to J. W. McRae, Field-
man for the Crops Branch, Ontario
Department of Agriculture, Cinque-
foils-like some people-cannot stand
too much prosperity, and the easiest
way to control these weeds is to im-
prove the soils on which they are
growing.
He goes on to point out that there
are four distinct varieties of Cinque-
foils, of which only one-Rough Cin-
quefoil-is an annual. Rough Cinque-
foil is usually found in hay fields
and the seed is an impurity in Tim-
othy seed. It has 3 leaves on an up-
right hairy stem, The small, bright
yellow flowers form a terminal clus-
ter. Mr. McRae states it can be read-
ily controlled by clipping several

Underneath. The flowers are also
yellow and resemble the Buttercup.
Mr. McRae points out that as the
last three mentioned above are per-
ennials, they are more difficult to
control than Rough Cinquefoil. How-
ever, he feels that where possible the
field should be broken up, cultivated
and put under a short rotation of
crops. Where this is neither possible
nor practical, infested pastures may
often be improved by sowing a good
permanent pasture mixture and by
the judicious use of commercial fer•
tilizers. Apparently Cinquefoil can
withstand neither prosperity in the
form of fertile soil, nor competition*
from legumes and grasses. Thus, he
says, one of the best methods of con-
