Farrier Phone 711j1 Whitechurch Ontario BACKACHES, NO. 2 MISERY, ARE MOSTLY SELF-INDUCED Bad backs-including ruptured discs, sacroiliacs, slipped vertebrae, wrenched muscles and torn ligaments -are second only to headaches as a source of bodily misery, states C. Les- ter Walker in the July Reader's Di- gest, And most of them, Walker adds, are self-inflicted and hence can be avoided by proper precautions. Back troubles originating from dis- ease are rare, Almost always the dif- ficulty is brought on by lifting (the wrong way), or by pushing, pulling, stooping, or by poor posture induced by easy chairs, soft mattresses and just plain slouching. Lifting weights, and not necessarily heavy ones, is the prime hurter of human backs. Taking a small child from a crib, though you've done it many times before, can give you a bad wrench if you're off balance when you lift. The lift-twist-and-heave of shovelling snow can wrench joints of vertebrae and rip ligaments loose. You can give yourself a sacroiliac by reaching from your chair to a side table and raising a reading lamp to bring it nearer. Gardeners who lift heavy rocks should know how. Don't lean over from the waist. Squat down, back straight and lift with your legs, Mot- orists whose seats are too low should use a cushion. Constant stretching up to see can raise hob with your back. Oversoft armchairs can aggravate back troubles. So can high heels. If your mattress sags deeply you're ly- ing with a curvature of the spine. A kitchen sink that's too low can have the same effect. "Once a bad back, always a bad back" is an old saying, but no longer )41111111.04M•11111.111.1411101.1.1•11•=1•0401011.11111.1.111116.114111111101141M Old - Time Fiddlers ONTARIO, TITLE CONTEST Shelburne, Sat., August 11 $500 - PRIZES - $500 Finals on CB C 'Trans-Canada Net- work, Playdowns Friday, Aug. 10th, to select eight contestants for $500 prize money ; $200, 8100, $75, five of $25 each.
