Old Times and temper it With a measure of de-
light,
„,Gazing into the fire to-night I can
see Frank father on his way
up from, Lower Town on the three
board long plank walit, Little Mr,
Hill was a Methodist—not Free Me-
thodist so-called, for ho wore a neck-
tie—nor yet a fire-baptized Method,.
ist, although he may have .subscribed
to that hallowed experience; but
little Hill, as we knew him, was
thorough-going in his belief and if
alive today would be classed as a
Fundamentalist,
My father asked him if he saw
a horse race on his way uptown and
Mr. Hill replied that he did not per-
mit even his right eye to look across
the Maitland to the fast flats where
Rollie and Bob worked Wanda and
Harold H. developed faster feet, Per-
haps this good man was more nar-
row than was necessary, but think of
the practice he got, up and back from
Lower Town on that three-plank side-
walk choosing with every footstep
the best plank of three, which usually
meant one that was warped upwards
at only one end and without a boot-
sized knot-hole in the middle, Besides,
no doubt, with commendable dexter-
ity, he sometimes managed to pass
Jim Lockridge without being humped
off into the burdocks.
All jokes aside, Frank Hill's father
was representative of a type of vital
godliness all too scarce in Spain and
in Canada. "I will lift up mine eyes
unto the hills from Whence cometh
my help," Thank God for hills,
One hot afternoon in midsummer I
remember passing George Phippen
on top of this stretch of decayed lum-
ber. "Warm today, Mr. Phippen."
"This is a cooker,"
Swiftly passing from summer to
winter, do you remember those ten
o'clock in the morning races on the
main street on the hard packed snow.
When recovering from appendicitis I
amused myself by rhyming about
them. As it comes to me, this was it.
A SPURT ON THE JOSEPHINE
SPEEDWAY
Look there! they start and down they
come
With quickening steps and pounding
hum,
Three abreast and two boxed in,
"Out of the way" or lose your skin.
Increasing speed the sailing hunch,
Pass the rink as their bits they
munch,
Straight as a wire is the driver's lines
What cares he for rumor of fines.

School Teachers Best
Who should lead and train a junior
choir? Sometimes an eXcellent or-
ganist and choir-Master, capable with
adults, will fail with children, As a
rule the best junior choir leaders
Will be school teachers, I know that
the Rev. Mr. Graham attributed the
Dundas success to Miss M. E. Finlay,
son, a school teacher,
On the GEC Church of the Air,
Christmas Sunday, I listened to the
Ryerson choir singing beautiful
Christmas music for the whole of
Canada, under the direction of Clar-
ence A. Barrett, Mr. Barrett, another
school teacher, has established an
enviable reputation for his work with
children as well as adults. He too, has
that invaluable combination, know-
ledge of music, understanding of
children and love for the church, The
combination is a prerequisite for
success, with juniors.
The Church of England has built
a tradition for good work, particul-
arly with boys' choirs and the by-
products are being garnered in
churches all over the world. Here and
there in all our denominations a jun-
ior choir makes a real contribution
But too often it is thought of only
as a contribution to music. More re-
cently we have come to recognize
that this work is helping produce
Christian character and prepare final

long time, that a junior choir can
Matte a tremendous contribution to.

lion isn't limited to music either, im-

value is the way that such an organ-

Fine Open ()Nonce
One of the finest arrangements
have ever seen was under the minis-
try of the Rev. J. Lorne Graham
when he was minister of St. Paul's
Church, Dundas. St. Paul's a beauti-
ful stone church, with broad central
aisle and fine open chancel, was well
designed for the type of work which
was done, with the adult, youth and
children's choirs,.
On Sunday morning at 11, the three
choirs, attractively gowned, came
down the aisle singing the opening
hymn of praise to God. There were
125 of them singing, and with that
many trained voices the congregation
couldn't help singing, The adult or
senior choir entered the chancel; the
intermediates, mostly high school age,
Rehearsed Hymns
Through the Years
Obviously, ,a junior choir is an ex-
cellent means of teaching children
good religious music. If properly
handled, such a choir will make con-
tribution from Sunday to Sunday and
not become a major attraction on oc-
casion. You can see what the St.
Paul's system should do to the habits
of the children through the years. I
One thing, the church which pro- I
vides good leadership for a junior
choir will have no dearth of appli-
cants for the senior choir. A more '
important thing is that the children
will become interested in the mean-
ing of the church's worship. Children
love church if they are helped to
understand the meaning of its ser-
vice, given an opportunity to take •
their part in it, and are provided
with an opportunity to escape from
a sermon which will probably he,
and probably ought to he, above their'
heads,
I have had junior choirs which'
were good, and some which weren't
so good. But I haVe learned that
when they are handled properly by a
supervisor who knows his music, his ,
children and his church, the 'junior
choir can become the most fruitful
department of Christian education in
the congregation Junior choir mem-
hers enter Confirmation classes and
move on into the full membership of •
the church. The average percentage!
of church members from the typical'
Sunday School will be much less, for
too many schools fail to interest the
children in the church itself.
