A large barn on the farm of Clifford
Alcock near Brussels, was destroyed
by fire during an eletcrical storm.

Council discussed plans for the
erection of a mausoleum.
The Humane Society's Bronze
Medal for Heroism was posthumously
awarded to Lois Dawson of East
Wawanosh, who lost her life while
saving that of a companion in the
early spring.

Spittal, former manager of
the Dominion Bank in Wingham was.
appointed manager of the same bank

Edward Lobsinger, freight clerk at
the C,N.R. station here for the past
16 years, retired to his home in
Mildmay.
September 27th
W. H. French gave a very interest-
ing talk on his trip through Europe.
The "dark day" of 1950 was the big
news of the week. The - light of the
sun was almost completely blotted out
for several hours by a dense pall of
smoke from fires in Alberta.
October 18th
Evening classes commenced at the
Wingham District High School.

The Ladies' Auxiliary to the Wing
ham Hospital sponsored a completely
successful rummage sale. More than

John W. Hanna. M.P.P, and Mrs.
Hanna left Malton by air for Miami,

first time by both curlers and the
hockey team.
Allen Sewers, five-year-old son of
Mr. and Mrs. Maurice Sewers was
killed in a tragic accident on the
highway a mile west of Wingham.

Pictured is Marjorie Hays, 23-year-
old lyric soprano of Goderich,, who
will compete for the "C.I.L. Singing
Stars of Tomorrow" scholarship
awards this Sunday evening at 9
o'clock. The program will be broad-
cast over CKNX,
It will be the first time Miss Hays
has been heard by a coast-to-coast
audience, although she is familiar to
local listeners who remember her pro-
gram series from CKNX in the sum-
mer of 1948. Since that time, the
Goderich Miss has spent a season with
the Detroit Light Opera Company
and has appeared in many Royal ,Con-
servatory of Toronto presentations.
For her appearance on "C,I.L.
Singing Stars of Tomorrow" Miss
Hays is eligible for a portion of more
than $3,000 in scholarship cash
awards.

and Mrs. Geo. Baker attended the
funeral in Tara on Tuesday of Mrs.
John Strong of Tara.
A united service of prayer will be
held in Trinity Anglican Chruch on
Wednesday evening at 8 p.m.
Mrs, Roy Gadke has returned from
the hospital following an operation.
Mrs. Ken, Graham spent the Christ-
mas holiday in Chatsworth.
Christmas Day visitors with Mr.
and Mrs. Wm. Wade were their son
Mr. Clarence Wade and Mrs. Wade.
Belgrave, Mr. Torn Wade and Mr.
and Mrs. B. Cruikshauks and baby of
Wingham.
OBITUARY
The death occurred in London Sun-
day of Helen Rutherford, wife of the
late George Pocock in her 82nd year.
A native of Howick, Scotland, de-
ceased came to Canada at ail early age
and for seventy years had been a resi-
dent in this vicinity. Deceased was a
member of the Baptist Church.
Left to mourn her passing are one
daughter, Helen of Toronto, three
sons, Walter, East Wawanosh; How-
ard, Ottawa; George, Lambeth. A
'brother Adam of Vancouver also sur-
vives. Predeceased are her husband
who passed away twelve years ago, a
daughter Margaret in 1924, one son
Wilfred in 1919.
Funeral service was held Wednes-
day afternoon at 2 p.m. from the R.
A, Currie funeral home. Pastor J. L.
Coyle of the Baptist Church officiated
with burial in Wingham Cemetery.

T. J. McDonald died of injuries
received in a. motor accident at Trow-
bridge.
Miss Dorothy Piper, a former Post
Office employee, was presented with
gifts by the business men prior to her
marriage.
