Bromley's magic touch leads Blyth Novices BY RUSTY BLADES Blyth's first play-off game was played last Monday, February 17 in Huron Park and Blyth came out on top by a 4 - 2 score. Although Blyth outplayed their opponents, the game was a tight checking affairthatwasn't decided until an empty net goal was scored with 18 seconds left in the game. Mike Bromley opened the scor- ing in the first period as Henry Bos fed him a nice pass and Mike put a wicked wrist shot into the net. Huron Park tied the game with only 23 seconds left in the period. Blyth took the lead again in the second period as the "Dynamic Duo" of Mike Bromley and Henry Bos connected once more for the blue and white. Mike gained control of the puck behind the Huron Park net, skated to the side and put a pass right onto "the Scoring Machine's" stick. All Henry had to do was redirect the disc into the twine. Unfortunately, Huron Park scored a goal with only 39 seconds left in the period to, once again, tie the contest. However, in the first minute of the third period, Mike Bromley again came through for Blyth as he scored an unassisted goal to give Blyth a 3 - 2 Lead. This set the stage for an exciting finish as the Blyth defence continuously turned back the Huron Park offensive power. Finally, Huron Park pulled their goalie with a little over a minute left in the game but they could not mount much of an attack as the Blyth checkers stopped their every manoeuver. The final 40 seconds were played in the Huron Park zone and this finally resulted in an empty net goal. Mike Bromley notched the goal, and another hat trick, as he took a pass from Ryan Chamney and threaded the shot through an obstacle course of legs and into the vacated net. It was a great team effort as everyone worked their hearts out for this victory. Thanks to Murray McNichol for supplying hot chocolate for the players after the game. Huron Park returned to Blyth on Wednesday evening and Blyth accomplished a bunch of "firsts" as they overcame adversity with a 6 - 4 overtime victory. They were dancing in the stands (and throw- ing hats) as, once again, Michael "Magic Man" Bromley put on a hockey clinic for all in attendance. Mike scored every kind of goal imaginable - a backhander, flip shot high in the corner, a break- away goal, a shot slid along the ice. into the net and hard, low wrist shots. You name it - Mike showed everybody how to do it. Six goals for the sharpshooter as he totally dominated and demoralized the dejected Huron Park diehards. Blyth led 2 - 0 after the first period as Mike started Blyth rolling. Rightwinger Benje Hakk- ers assisted on Mike's first goal while Henry Bos and Peter Craig chipped in with assists on Mike's second goal. Huron Park battled back totie the game in the second period but, with only 20 seconds left in the period, "the Magic Man" record- ed his hat trick with Peter Craig and Jerrod Button earning assists. The ice surface became littered with hats as the crowd went delirious. The score was 3-2 in Blyth's Brussels Midgets bury Kincardine The midgets were in Kincar- ine on Friday night for their second series of hockey. They defeated the home team 9 - 0. Marty Rutledge lead the Brussels attack with four Blyth Peewees score thrilling win Blyth Peewees have just com- pleted a successful regular season. This is the first time in a number of years that the boys have played in the W.O.A.A. league. With the introduction this year of body contact at the Peewee level, the team has found the games to be a real challenge. Even though the team has been plagued by injuries (two broken collar bones and one set of cracked ribs) the team showed fine form on Wednesday, February 19 as they met Zurich in the first game of the playoffs. With the game tied at five apiece, Jeff Nesbitt thrilled the crowd by scoring with one second remaining to Lead Blyth to a 6 - 5 win. The Brussels goal scorers were Tommie Pearson and Shane Wilson. favour as the teams headed into the third period. This period was no doubt one of the wildest seen in the Blyth arena since the Try Hards - Oldtimers' game. The play of the game was recorded by goalie Josh Yanchus as he came up with a brilliant save on a penalty shot awarded to Huron Park on a Blyth miscue. Blyth came right back to take a 4 - 2 lead as Mike Bromley notched number four with a clever assist to defenceman Peter Craig. With only four minutes and 57 seconds left in the third period a Huron Park player took a five minutes major for slashing with intent to injure which carried an automatic game mis- conduct. Mike Bromley took an uncalled for, vicious two handed slash from this unsportsmanlike player. The powerplay was short- lived however as Blyth took two separate minor penalties to nullify the manpower advantage. Huron Park scored two goals in the final three minutes, the last with only 25 seconds left in the period, to force overtime. The teams changed ends and played a 10 minutes overtime frame that was filled with relentless end-to- end action highlighted by out- standing defensive plays and goaltending saves. Finally, Blyth broke the tie with less than five minutes left as "the Magic Man" netted number five with Brian McNichol getting the assist. Mike Bromley then gave Blyth some breathing room, and a 6 -4 victory, with two minutes and 32 seconds Left as Jamie Bromley assisted. A truly remarkable game that even the Brussels' advance scout seemed to enjoy. Brussels is next and some people are already dubbing this "the Citizen Series", putting these two major communi- ties from this upstart weekly newspaper against each other. The first game was played in Brussels last Friday night and when the final overtime buzzer sounded, the only issue decided was that this is going tobe a classic. The game was a scoreless tie after three periods as outstanding goal- tending kept the game deadlocked at 0 - 0. Enough cannot be said about Blyth goaltender Josh "Zero" Yanchus as he starred as Blyth's final wall of defence. Time after time, Josh turned back the Brus- sels' onslaught with great pad and stick saves. Blyth headed into overtime for the second game in a row with fatigue written all over their faces. The action was just as exciting in overtime as play went end to end. Defenceman Peter Craig earned the assist on the goal as Blyth seemed headed for victory. How quickly fortunes change as Blyth took two needless question- able penalties and were playing two men short when Brussels tied the game with only one minute and 26 seconds left in overtime. Another thriller as Blyth and Brussels played to a 1 - 1 overtime tie. Next game of the four point series is Wednesday, February 26 in Blyth a 7 o'clock. Game three, with neutral referees, will be played in Brussels on Friday, February 28 at 6 o'clock. This will no doubt be a long, hard-fought, well played series and fan support could play a major roll in the outcome. Set aside Wednesday and Friday nights to come out and cheer on your Blyth novice hockey team.
