Drayton returned to Brussels on Friday evening for the second game in the best of five series. The visiting club minus one line of forwards played a much better hockey game and came up with a tie score at the end of regulation time. Brussels held a 2 -1 lead at the end of the first period with Bruce Johnston scoring both goals. As sists went to Mike Fraser and Rodney Nicholson on each goal. Each team scored two goals a piece in the second period. Mike Fraser and Bruce Johnston scored for Brussels with assists by Ken Jamieson, Bruce Johnston and Dean Nicholson. There were only eight seconds left on the clock when Mike Fraser assisted by Dean Nicholson and Ian Johnston scored the winning goal. The boys will return to Drayton this Wednes- day night for the third game and, if necessary, will be back in Brussels possibly Friday night. The Peewee A team had a busy week playing four games. They were in Blyth on Monday night Blyth novices lose late in game BY RUSTY BLADES Last Wednesday, January 29 saw the Mitchell novice team travel to Blyth. In an evenly-matched contest played before a boisterous crowd, Mitchell scored three late goals to steal a 3 - 1 victory. The first two periods remained scoreless as each team received excellent goaltending which caus ed scoring chances to disappear before their eyes. Blyth’s persistance finally paid off as they opened the scoring in the first minute of the third period. With the play in Blyth’s zone, defenceman Peter Craig spotted leftwinger Henry Bos patiently waiting at the blueline for a clearing pass and fed him the puck. Henry turned and spotted Mike Bromley breaking across centre ice and quickly head manned the puck up to him. Mike stickhandled around the Mitchell defence and Black Hawks. Although the Leafs lost 7 - 4, an entertaining game was enjoyed by all who attended and will probably be remembered by the kids for a long time. There was no doubt that Ballard’s souvenier booths were the real winners on this night. The hottest rumour circulating around Maple Leaf Gardens was picked up by Ben Hakkers, who overheard Toronto management discussing coach Dan Maloney’s future with the team. Word has it that Maloney is about to be fired and replaced by the coach of the Chinese national hockey team .... a Mr. Win Sum Soon. Excellent work Ben!!! Atoms come dose but lose put a beautiful wrist shot behind the Mitchell goalie. Blyth kept the pressure up and appeared headed for another victory before some late game defensive miscues brought cele brations to a screeching halt. Two clear cut breakaways and a power play goal in the final three and a half minutes carried the Mitchell squad to victory. This was a close game which either team could have won but an unlucky scoring touch around the net spelled the end for Blyth. An exhibition game has been arranged for tonight, Wednesday, February 5, in Blyth against Teeswater. “Hats off’’ to novice manager Paul Yanchus for organizing a successful father-son bus trip last Saturday to Toronto to see the Maple Leafs host the Chicago After being thumped by Wing ham Atoms on two other occasions this season, Blyth Atoms at least made it close when they played host to their northern neighbours January 27. Blyth held Wingham scoreless for the first period but Wingham scored early in the second period then added one more in the second and one in the third before Blyth broke through. Defenceman Danny Van Bakel gave Blyth its only goal assisted by Ian Andrews. The two were rewarded for their effort by being chosen the Blyth team’s player showing the most effort (Van Bakel) and best offensive player (Andrews). Jason Elliott in goal was chosen best defensive player for the team. The team’s Saturday game was cancelled. wheretheypickedupa7 - Owin.
