CHRISTMAS EVE
The seasons come and go and each
in its turn interests us. It seem but
the other week that tine grain ripened
and was harvested; woods reddened
and the fields stretched far beyond in
Clark brown furrows; the sunset cane
earlier and each puff of wind rustled
the withered leaves; then out of the
low; dark sky calve the thick, silent,
Lvhirling 500w and it is Christmas Eve
1949.
Christmas, the Anniversary of the
world's greatest event, holds time to•
.gether. To that one event, tate birth
of a Saviour, all the early world look-
ed forward; to that sante event the
latter world looks back. Isaiah, stand-
ing on the peaks of prophecy, looked
beyond many centuries and saw the
new star on the horizon. Our Christ-
mas Eve 19 hundred years ago, the
Magi viewed that shimmering star
from the narrow window of their tow-
er and prepared to follow it. To -day,
as Ch ristnlas dawns, that sante story,
of the Christ Child, familiar to all, is
ever new. ever meaningful.
Estrangements which have embitter-
ed the whole year melt in this night's
hospitable smile. There are warmer
handshakings on this night than dur-
ing the past twelve months. There is
more charity at this time than at any
other. Poverty and scanty clothing
and fireless grates come home on this

HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA
From coast to coast and from city'
home to lonely hamlet Saturday night
usually finds the radio tuned to Maple
Leaf Gardens. Many listeners do nut
have the privilege of seeing the great
National League Hockey Teams in
action, or of getting a glimpse of their
favorite players in person. They are tion and capable of expansion. Build -

HOSPITAL FOR
SICK CHILDREN
"Where no Child knocks in Vain"
Over subscription by $lfi million
of the $G million asked in 1945 for the
new Hospital for Sick Children speaks
well for its place in the hearts of tete
people.
At that time, this amount would
have assured one of the best and most
completely equipped institutions. This
was not to be. a lavish show place but
one based on the need for accotnnhoda-
drop from sight in the sports parade. I
Two recent books make interesting
reading for the hockey enthusiast front
this latter angle.
Foster Hewitt has written "He
Shoots, He Scores." Although his
main character, who finally scores the
winning goal in the finals and is a
great success, is fictional, the remain-
der of the story is fact built around
Maple Leaf Gardens, the owners and
the Leaf players. The story is well
told and as thrilling as Mr. Hewitt's
broadcasts. He knows the game so
well that what he says on methods of
play, the conditions of the player's
life, the player -coach -manager rela-
tionship and the possibilities in pro
hockey can be accepted as authentic.
Don MacMillan has written "Rink
Rat" which outlines the effect of pro-
fessional hockey on a fictional Saskat-
chewan boy. In contrast to the rosy..

College Street site. • Many of the won-
derful things dbne for, children now
can only be done while they are very
young. Their ailments and cures do
not wait on a drop in building costs.
Thus the new hospital was started'
on a modified scale but at an increased
cost of $4 million.
This is not Toronto's • Hospital.
More than 35,% of the patients come
from outside the Toronto"area. Indeed
yond. It is doubtful 'if there are many
they come „from all Canada and be -
communities in Ontario that have
not tapped its reservoir of skill and
healing.
Many gifts, large and small are still
needed and this Christmas season,
when the happiness and welfare of
children is paramount, would be an
appropriate time to make your gift.
For parents, it•miglht be an investtent
for your child, for those not parents,
an investment in youth,
