Howick Township Community Hall
Re-Opened
A large crowd representing differ-
ent parts of Howick Township gath-
ered on Wednesday evening for the
first social event in the recently re-
modelled Township Community Hall.
Mr. C, D. ' Walmsley, Pres., of the
Community Club was chairman and
called on Reeve E. J. Farrish, who
declared the hall officially open. Mr.
Farrish was convener of the commit-
tee in charge of renovating the hall
and to him and his committee a great
deal of credit should be given. Many
favorable comments were heard on the
extensive improvements that have
been made. Mr. Norman Wade spoke
hriefly of the building of the hall in
1885 and the value of co-operation and
good citizenship, Reeve elect If. H.
Strong was also called on and corn-
mended the work that had been dine,
There were twenty-three tables of
progressive euchre in play in the
basement, Prize winners were: Ladies
high score, ,Mrs. Len Harper and
gents, Mr, Morley McMichael.• The
younger set danced upstairs to the
music of Carruthers Orchestra The
lunch counter was in charge of Mrs.
E. J. Farrish, Mrs. Ewart Whitfield,
Mrs. E. H. Strong, Mrs, Lloyd Hockt•
ridge and Mrs. Cloyne Michel.
Christmas Meeting of W. Institute
Mrs. W. C, King opened her home
on Tuesday afternoon for the Decem-
ber meeting of the Women's Institute.
There was an attendance of thirty
members and visitors. The President,

Mrs, P. Ashton presided and Mrs.
Cecil Wilson presented minutes and
treasurer's report. There was a gener-
ous donation of tea towels for the kit-
chen in the hall with promise of more
to come. The president expressed
thanks for .donations of a pump from
Mr. Geo. King and two large tables
from Hyndman Bros., also for some
smaller contributions to the kitchen
equipment. A committee was 4ppoint-
ed to look after boxes of Christmas
Cheer for Shut-ins. There was an ex-
change of Christmas gifts. The motto
"Title gracious Art of Giving," was
taken by Miss E. Burns who stressed
the spiritual rather than the material
gifts and brought some fine thoughts
on the subject. Rev. J. C. Caley was
guest speaker and in his address said
that if Christmas has not a Christian
meaning then it has no meaning.
Christmas has a cross o'er shadowing
it. Jesu embodies peace. Christmas Cen-
tres around the child, home and peace.
Mrs. Fred Demerling of Fordwich,
gave an interesting demonstration of
chocolate making. A dainty lunch was
served by the committee in charge,
Mrs. F. Hyndman, Mrs. Cloyne Mich-
el and the hostess.
St. Stephens Girls' Auxiliary
The December meeting of the Girls
Auxiliary was held at the home of
Mrs. L, Sanderson. The meeting was
opened with prayer, followed by the
girl's prayer and Lord's prayer. The
scripture was read by Irla Newton tak-
en front St, Luke (3; 1-8. The busi-
ness was discussed when it was decid-
ed to put on the play at the Music Fes-
tival in the spring. The following of-
ficers were elected for the coming
year.

of the evening was spent singing
Christmas Carols after which a dainty
lunch was served by the hostess.

Former C. P, R. Agent Dies at
Mount Forest
Word was received here Tuesday
morning of the death of Mr. Bert
Cook of 'Mount Forest. Mr. Cook had
been in poor health for the past two
.years.. His wife and one daughter,
Mrs, (Dr.) Mutton of Mitchell sur-
vive. Mr, Cook was well anti favor-
ably kinmat in this community where
lie was C.P.R. agent in Gorrie and
also in Wroxeler for a number of
years.
