CONTRACT BRINE
An interesting freak was dealt at
Bridge Club last week and it prods c-
ed an assortment of good and poor
bidding, At .all but two tables, the
contract was sik diamonds, which
indicates good bidding by North and
South, but that the West players
involved permitted these contracts to
stand was not commendable.
North dealer,
North and South vulnerable.

North has a close decision in select-
ing his opening bid, Not vulnerable,
five diamonds would have been the
definite choice, but being vulnerable
this bid is about half a trick above
the. safety zone. On the other hand,
his own very wild distribution sug-
gests that four diamonds is unlikely
to shut out the opponents. In view of
this, the slight danger involved in
opening with five diamonds would
seem to be warranted.
If North bids five diamonds, South's
vulnerable raise to six is routine. With
an opening bid of four it is a lttle more
difficult to reach six, and probably in
some cases the way was eased by
West making a competing bid of six
clubs.
Certainly there is no criticism of
West's overcall of six clubs. The point
is that he shouldn't have stopped
there, It was more important to out-
bid the slam than the game contract.
Let us reason the point. At seven
clubs West could lose four tricks
(700 points doubled) at the worst. For
this to happen North and South
would need the A K of spades, theAce
of hearts and the Ace of clubs. With
all those cards together with North's
powerful diamond suit and the ob-
viously erratic distribution, surely the
diamond slam would almost be a cer-
tainty. If East held just one of the
key cards mentioned then the Penalty
at seven clubs would be too small to
justify allowing North and South to
make even a vulnerable game, and to
risk an opposing slain under such a
condition should be unthinkable.
