Afternoon Tea and Bake Sale
An enjoyable afternoon tea was held
at the home of Mrs. Jas, Edwards, on
'Tuesday afternoon, by ladies of Group
2 of the United Church W.A. There
was a very good attendance and the
ladies also held a sale of home made
baking.
Howick Pioneer. Laid To Rest
Charles Edward Irwin, who fur
nearly ninety years lived on the same
farm in Howiek township, passed
away on August 24th, at his home, lot
12, con, 10. He had been confined to
bed since May. Until the past year,
when his sight failed he had been a
Very active man for his years, He
was born near Bowmauville, the sin
of the late Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Irwin,
a on November 2nd., 1852, and was in
his ninety-sixth year.
He came to Howick in 1860 and in
1877 he was united in marriage to
Emma Lillian Shaver, who died Aug.
15th, 1928. An only son, Fred, was
accidentally killed in Toronto, in Jan.
1927, He was the last member of his
family of six, three sisters, Mrs, J.
Hainstock, Manitoba; Mrs, John Har-
ding, Gorrie and Mrs. Andy Cunning-
ham, Wingham, and two brothers,
Robert and William, former Gorrie
postmaster having predeceased him.
Surviving' are two daughters, Miss
Emma, Gorrie, and Miss Mabel at
home, 6 grandchildren, 12 great grand-
children and 2 great great grand child-
ren,
He was a member of the Presby-
terian church, a former elder and a
respected resident.
Funeral service was held on Friday
afternoon from the home of his dau-
ghter, Miss Emma in Gorrie and was
conducted by Rev. Thos. Hutton of
the Presbyterian Church assisted by
Rev. J. R. Watt of the United Church.
Miss , Jean and Mr, Harvey Sperling
sang, "Beautiful Isle of Somewhere."
Interment was in Gorrie cemetery.
Pallbearers were: Oliver Stewart,
Geo. Galbraith, Clifford Dodds, Jos.
Bennett, Gust. Prince and Leonafd
Ruttan.
Bearers of the many beautiful flow-
ers were Bill and Gary Austin, Allan,
Wanda, Jack and Roy Stewart.
Relatives were in attendance from
Toronto, Caledonia, Hensall and Lis-
ssq e a ac u lin and o nue Gil-
mar, of ..Carrick, were guests of their
aunt, Mrs. L. Sanderson, over the
iweek-end.

was a week-end visitor with her eons-

Derailment of four freight cars on
the C.P.R. between Arthur and Mount
Forest, when a considerable section of
roadway was torn up, caused delay in
arrival of the. train with mail, on
Monday and Tuesday of last week,

Neill in valuing the contents of Huron
Co, Museum, which contains 774 art-
icles, and these are moderately valued
at $2,797,25 without the three large
trailers in which they are housed. At
present k-
ing model of the most primitive .water
flour mill known. When completed,
this will make the twelfth method of
grinding meal or flour shown in the
museum collection. History has reveal-
ed' three more ways whereby flour is
made and Mr, Neill hopes to build
these also.

Mr. Addison Neill of Glencoe, a vie-
tint of last week's plane crash in Nor-
thern Manitoba, when 21 persons lost
their lives was a son of the late Rev,
John Neill, formerly of Glenallan, and
a cousin of Mr, Herb Neill s. He was
returning after two years spent at

The Gorrie Women's Institute will
hold their September meeting in the
