FORTY YEARS AGO
Cook-Taylor--A quiet wedding took
place on Wednesday, July 14th, at the
home of Mrs. Chas. Taylor, when her
eldest daughter, Ella, was united in
marriage to Leonard Cook of West-
field, by the Rev. S. H, Moyer.
Bowlers at London—Five hundred
bowlers from different parts of West-
ern Ontario were in London this
week attending the annual tournament
of the Western Ontario Lawn Bowl-
ing Association. Wingham was repre-
sented by one rink composed of Wm.
Holmes, Chas. Knechtel, A, Porter
and A. M. Crawford. They won their
first game by a score of 27 to 7 and
the second round were victorious by a
21 to 8 score over J. B, Drew's Tor-
onto rink.

Ross - Dickison
The home of Mr. and Mrs. W. C,
Dickison, Culross township, was the
setting for the marriage of their dau-
ghter, Isla Jean, to Mr. Elmer E,
Ross, son or Mr, and Mrs, Walter
Ross, Teeswater, Rev. John Hardwick
officiated. Given in marriage by her
father, the bride wore a gown
of brocaded organdie with nylon yoke
appliqued in satin, She wore a veil of
embroidered silk net and carried a
bouquet of red roses. The .bride was
attended by her sister, Miss Alice Die-
kison, wearing a pink taffeta frock
and a pink shoulder veil, Her flowers
were a bouquet of pink carnations. ,
Marion Ruttan, niece of the flower
girl dressed in blue taffeta, her blue
net headdress was trimmed with flow-
ers and she carried a nosegay of sweet I
peas. Mr, Wilfred Ross, brother of the I
bridegroom, was best man, Miss Dora
Ballagh, played the wedding music,
and Mr. Gordon Dickison sang Be-
cause. A reception followed the cere-
mony. Mrs. Dickison received in a
navy faille dress with. corsage of pink
roses. Mrs, Ross, the bridegroom's
mother, assisted in a frock of medium
blue shade, with pink roses corsage,
Mr. and Mrs. Ross will reside in
Teeswater.

Weeds are one of the greatest pro-
blems in successful farming, and par-
ticularly in producing a more abundant
supply of clean forage grain, and other
seed. To get the best returns from
the land and produce a high class of
clean seed, .farmers have to wage a
ceaseless war keeping weeds in check
and preventing the spread of new
kinds. One of the principal reasons
why weeds are not brought under bet-
ter control is beacuse such large num-
bers of,weed seeds are put into the soil
through the lack of care in ordinary
farm operations.
Investigations have shown that
while many farmers are extremely
careful in the selection and cleaning
of the seed' they use, others do not
give this important step in farming the
attention it rightly deserves. Clean
seed is of vital importance, because
some weeds are so prolific in seed pro-
I duction that relatively clean fields may
become :badly contaminated in two or
