He,in turn, uses it to pay for various goods and services the town people have to offer. The more money the farmers have to spend the more Renfrew will bene- fit, ,for a large share of the town's business comes from surrounding rural areas. As matters now stand. farmers in the area served by creameries of Ren- frew are receiving about $1,000.00 less per day for theif cream than they might have received had there been no margarine. Such a loss in purchas- ing power is bound to be severely felt by business people of Renfrew—Ren- frew Advance. The above situation is just as ap- plicable to Wingham, where we have two Creameries as it is to Renfrew. THE RED MELD AND SOMETHINO ABOUT IT With the local campaign in progress the term "Red Shield" is on many lips. TO practically everyone its use will have reference to The Salvation Army and to that worthy organization's an- nual appeal• for funds, Singe its beginning some eighty . years ago, The Salvation Army has been called many names: Some were decidedly opprobrious, especially in the early days when The ,Salvation .Army's aims and methods were not understood or misinterpreted, But the Salvationists didn't mind, and the ex- pletives, like many another form of persecution, did not in any way retard The Army's Growth. In the first world war the term "Salvation Army Lassie" was the fay- orite description of Tommy Atkins for everyone who wore a bonnet of blue with scarlet facings. These "Lassies" endeared themselves to the troops by their selfless service, often under fire, They added that quality of service to, the distribution of refreshments that transformed, for weary, embattled men, "coffee into nectar and doughnuts into manna from heaven." And the fighting men didn't forget! In the second world war Salvation Army operations among tthe troops were carried on to an extent which, by comparison, makes world war l's effort look relatively small, But the spirit of service was the same, and the reaction of the fighting men was ex, actly the same. "Hallelujah Lassie" became Sally" Ann," and the term and symbol of the Red Shield became a pass-word in canteen and other auxil- iary operations. Millions of sheets of notepaper bearing the Red Shield found their way back to Canada from all the battle-fronts of the earth, so that the folk at home became almost as familiar with the symbol as the un- iformed husbands and sons. But how and where did the Red Shield originate? The Salvation Army, as almost everyone knows. bases its principles and practices upon the Bible, and the choice of this symbol is .no exception. In Use Book of Na- hum, the Prophet' declares: "The shield of his mighty men is made red; the valiant men are in scarlet." The allusion is appropriate. "mighty men with red shields," the warriors of right and helpfulness. And while The Salvation Army has taken the red shield for its symbol, it would be the last to claim for itself the title of "mighty men." It's spirit is essential- ly modest, though its wish and will to serve is vigorously ambitious. Red is the color of courage, The Shield is a weapon both of offence and defense. It's more sentimental con- notation is also apt, for since its in- ception The Salvation Army has been "shielding" the hungry and the home- less, the sorrowing and the sinning, in all parts of the world, and not least of all in the Dominion of Can- ada. The campaign in Wingham is spon- sored by the Wingham Kinsmen, and is practically completed. If you have been overlooked, any of the club will be pleased to receive your donation. Providing Shade and Pastures For Growing Stock ••••••••• Shade for ',rowing chickens adds materially to the comfort of birds, says Prof. 5. E. During the rniOntha (f July and August it is more par- ticularly important to supply some form of protection from the liot sun. The specialized poultry men have in many cases provided adequate pros tection by plantink rows of trees through the range in such a way that every bird can 'find a comfortable shady spot, This is probably one of the most desirable ways of handling the shade problem:Where trees are used as shade, the lower limbs should be trimmed to a height of about ten feet so the sun can reach all parts of the ground at some time during the day. Low trees and bushes have no place on a poultry range. Where poultry must be ranged in fields that are alternated with other farm crops, it is not feasible to plant many trees in the middle of the field. Shade can be provided by planting corn or sunflowers, about the first of June, and it will supply good protect- ion by the time the extremely hot weather arrives. While not every one agrees that good pasture will save a lot of feed and expense in raising pullets, it is generally conceded that it will produce better pullets, that will stand up better in the heavy grind of production dur- ing the fall and winter months. Good pasture is short pasture. It is therefore necessary to clip the grass regularly. Long grass is of no use to chickens, The grass should be growing so it is tender and nutritious, not at a standstill when it becomes tough and fibry. Tlie common grasses such as the rye grasses, fescues or blue grasses and the ladino or white dutch clovers. The cereal grasses, such as rye or oats are also quite suitable and are used to supplement the permanent pasture or where a limited amount of land is available and they are sown in strips at about 2 to 3 week intervals. When there is sufficient moisture the cereal grasses will supply a constant supply of tender nutritious feed, Voting chickens should be put on pasture as soon as the weather cons ditions and their age permits. as they benefit if not only from the nutritious grass but from time sunshine as well. Improve the quality of your pullets by providing shade, good Pasture and a sanitary range, Production is up costs are down thanks to DOW TT'S the story that hundreds of satisfied A DURO users are telling their neighbors all over the country! Among some of the nations re- presented will be Great Britain, Ire- land, United States, Australia, New Zealand, France, Belgium, Luxem- bourg, The Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Finland, India, China, Burma, Denmark, Southern Rodesia, Kenya, Hungary, Western Germany and Jam- aica. An important County Director's meeting was held on Monday even- ing, May 23rd, with every township represented except Turnmberry. The National Film Board circuit came up for discussion, and' the dir- ectors decided to try and continues un- der the present set-up. A committee was named consisting of the President acid Vice-Presidents to study the situ- ationh The following resolution was pre- sented to the board of directors from the Huron Presbytery Laymen's As- sociation. The resolution was endorsed but some of the members wondered why only farmers were Menti,,ned. Whereas the practice of conducting farm operations on Sunday, such as tilling the soil,- harvesting, combining, etc., is becoming prevalent in this Presbytery of Huron. Be it resolved that we, the Lay Association of Huron Presbytery of the United Church of Canada, call upon all Christian people throughout the Presbytery to refrain from, and not in any way emamtenance, such labour on the Sabbath. Our pioneer forefathers could sow their fields and could cut their crops with the scythe and cradles and har- vest them without resorting to Sun- day labour. Surely we, in this highly mechanised age, with all our equip- ment could do so without desecrating the Day, We are in imminent danger (if los- ing the heritage of our. Christian Sab- bath, that oar forefathers have passed down to us. A day spent in rest and .quietnessea, and worship, is surely what this age need in these feverish times, We in this day, greatly need to learn that man does not live by bread alone.
