seed is not really fit for sowing,
Seed that is offered for sale for
seeding in Canada comes under the
provisions of the Dominion Seed Act,
and the regulations regarding the
weed seed content are most stringent.
Weeds which are known. to be ex-
tremely noxious and which have not
become established in this country, are
not allowed in any of the+ three
seed grades, Weeds which are very
difficult to eradicate and cause heavy
crop losses are not permitted in No, 1
seed grade, Fortunately these weeds
are not widely distributed, Secondary
noxious weeds unfortunately are wide-
ly distributed em they cause heavy
crop losses;- Seeds of such weeds are
allowed in very limited number in the
seed grades.
A final crop, are the weeds Which
cause less crop damage, and which
can be easily eliminated by good cult-
ural methods. The Act allows for -
greater tolerance of seeds in this
group,
The strict regulations under the
Seed Act are there for a purpose, to
assure the buyer gets good seed
which in turn will help to prevent the
spread of weeds, When buying seed,
it is worth buying the best. When
cleaning seed on the farm, it is worth
cleaning it thoroughly. If in doubt,
put it through the fanning-mill a sec-
ond time.

DELAY REBATES
ON INCOME TAX
Canadians who have been entitled to
a rebate on income taxes deducted at
source will havapayment of the rebate
postponed by the dissolution of Parl-
iament Saturday.
In his budget address March 22nd.,
Finance Ministter Abbott said Canad-
ians who became exempt from taxes
entirely when tthe new tax rates be-
came effective April 1, woul receive
rfunds on portions of their tax al-
ready paid "as soon as possible."
This would concern persons whose
exemptions tinder the new rates freed
them from income tax. Foi- example, a
married man with no children would
be entitled to the refund immediately
if he carne less than $2000, the new
standard exemption.
These persons now will not receive
their rebates until next fall or later.
This, Mr. Abbott told the Commons
Friday night, was the only particular
in which budget changes announced
March 2nnd. will be affected. The oth-
er provisions of the budget will re-
main until or unless changed by a
new Parliament,
Persons who still have to yay taxes
under the new rates were not affected.
Under the budget provisions, they
were not due for any refund until after
filing their income tax returns next
year.

There are definite indications today
that Britain's austerity program may
continue after .the expiration of the,

ing to James Carson, president' of the
Ban kof Toronto and honorary nation-
al treasurer of The United Eniergency
Fund for Britain. Mr. Carson who
jusht returned, after making his first
trip to Britain in 12 years, is of the
opinion that it may take five yeaars for
the nation to achieve its goal of econ-
omic independence.
The Biritsh people are confronted
with another cut' in their meagre meat
rations which now permit only eight
pence worth of meat for, each person
per week. Mr. Carson explained, but
be praised the courag eand strength
of character of Sir Stafford Cripps,
Britain's "iron" chancellor of the ex-
chequer, and the English housewife,
particularly the one of the . working
man "who bears the brunt of the pro-
leme raised by food rationing,"
"Many working men get mid-day
meals in factory canteens with meat
sometimes on tine menu," Mr, Carson
added. "The housewife, on the other
hand must struggle along with the
scant allotments of food allowed by
rationing. Unless she has been lucky
enough to get a parcelafrorn Canada,

ily, Trimmed meats, and even tinned

Mr, Carson declares that he had

CLEAN SEED
PREVENTS WEEDS
New chemical discoveries in recent
years to assist in the eradication of
weeds, have tended to overshadow
one of the simplest ways of reducing
weeds in the farm. And that is, don't
plant them.
When using farm grown seed it is
false economy not to clean it thor-
oughly, as partially cleaned seed is
-one of the quickest ways of increasing
weeds around the farm, It should not
be a matter for congratulation if the
material screened out is not large, un-
less there is assurance that the seed
remaining is clean and as free from
weed seeds as possible.
Small seeds in particular, such as
clover, alsike and red clover, are not
easily cleaned, and these small seeds
aare often sown when they would be
classed as "rejected" under Regula-
tions of the Dominion Seed Act, or at
best would grade only ,as No. 2 or 1L o.
